Science museum offers 3-D face screenings for visitors

LONDON, UK: Visitors to the Science Museum in London can now volunteer to have their photograph taken with a 3-D camera and explore what their faces look like in another dimension. The Me in 3D project is part of the museum’s ongoing Live Science programme, in which visitors can volunteer to take part in real experiments conducted by visiting scientists.

Plastic surgeons perform Belgium’s first face transplant

GHENT, Belgium: A team of plastic surgeons at the Ghent University Hospital has successfully executed Belgium’s first full face transplant. Although it was the world’s 19th face transplant, this was the first time that the complex procedure was fully planned using digital planning and 3-D printing. During the 20-hour-long procedure the patient, who suffered from a large facial defect, received bone, muscles, veins, nerves, and skin from a donor who had just died.

At the exhibition, 3Shape’s DentalSystem was officially proclaimed the Czech Market’s Best Dental 3-D CAD/CAM system. Furthermore, the company’s TRIOS digital impression-taking solution was awarded the Czech Market’s Best Intra-Oral Scanner.
