Dairy products during pregnancy may prevent childhood caries

OSAKA, Japan: Researchers have found that a high intake of dairy products during pregnancy is associated with a lower risk of dental caries in children. For the first time, they examined the primary teeth of more than 300 children in relation to their mothers’ nutrition habits during pregnancy.

Research suggest old folks should have teeth cleaned to avoid heart troubles

TAIPEI, Taiwan: Data analysis of patients with public health insurance in Taiwan has backed up the claim that oral health and heart disease might be associated later in life. People over the age of 50 who had received at least one tooth scaling showed slightly lower incidence of myocardial infarction, other cardiovascular events and strokes than those who had received none, according to a research paper published in the American Journal of Medicine.

Childhood dental problems may lead to chronic disease

BRISBANE, Australia: According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare’s 2011 report on oral health and dental care, about 17 per cent of adults in the country avoid eating certain foods owing to dental problems. Researchers are thus conducting a study on how poor dental health can influence children to eat unhealthy food, which is associated with a higher risk of obesity and chronic disease.
