IDS 2017: Periodontology in focus owing to rising treatment need

COLOGNE, Germany: Owing to demographic changes and the growing number of elderly patients worldwide in particular, periodontology is becoming increasingly important. In order to update dental professionals on the latest developments in the field, periodontology will be a main topic at the 2017 International Dental Show (IDS), which will take place in Cologne from 21 to 25 March, according to the event organisers.

The ageing population in many parts of the world, particularly in industrialised countries, is fuelling the demand for preventive treatment in dentistry, including frequent periodontal treatment and oral prophylaxis aimed at retaining the natural dentition for a lifetime. Over the past several years, a considerable number of innovations in all areas of periodontology for use in the practice, such as genetic and microbiological diagnostic tools for risk assessment, instruments for surgery and non-surgical therapy, chemical and mechanical aids for prophylaxis, biological growth factors for tissue regeneration and laser applications, have become available.

Diagnosis
Individual risk of developing periodontal disease and the speed at which it progresses can be assessed more accurately today using various methods. For example, molecular genetic tests enable the dentist to assess the genetic predisposition to inflammation and overall risk for the specific patient. In addition, molecular biological analysis kits enable more accurate assessment of and treatment planning for existing inflammation.

Periodontal therapy
A wide range of offerings for oral prophylaxis and periodontal treatment, such as probing instruments, sonic, ultrasonic and air polishing devices, as well as air scalers, will be on display during IDS 2017. Furthermore, laser applications for cutting or removing soft tissue and state-of-the-art microsurgical suture materials and effective visual aids, such as magnifying glasses and operating microscopes, will be presented in recognition of the trend towards minimally invasive methods. With regard to regenerative therapy, visitors will gain an overview of enamel matrix proteins, resorbable membranes and bone substitute material.

Dr Markus Heibach, Executive Director of the Association of German Dental Manufacturers, emphasised: “At the International Dental Show in Cologne, one can experience close up how the prevention and therapy options have further been developed. With tangible innovations and direct contact with the respective manufacturers, IDS offers all visitors true added value”.
