MASAKA, Uganda: As part of its first charity mission in the country, Henry Schein Dental UK has donated needed dental products to the Salvadorian Children’s Earthquake Trust (SALCET) outreach at the Mata Dental Clinic in Masaka. The clinic serves a large area and a population of over 1.7 million people. During the two-week mission, which took place in late 2016, more than 400 patients were provided with urgently needed dental treatment.

In total, Dr Chris Jagger, MBE, Chairperson of SALCET, and Dr Eroni Jjunju, a dentist at Mata Dental Clinic, performed nearly 250 extractions, 50 fillings, 85 fissure sealants, and more than 100 prophylaxis treatments and 60 topical fluoride applications. Two sessions of patient education, including toothbrushing instructions, were given.

SALCET was established in 2005 in response to the emergency and long-term rehabilitation needs of children suffering as a result of earthquakes and other natural disasters in El Salvador and other vulnerable countries. Key activities are the provision of medical and supportive care to children affected, resourcing health care infrastructure and addressing specific health care needs in poor communities.

“Henry Schein is proud to support the SALCET team on their first dental mission,” said Simon Gambold, Henry Schein’s Vice President of the European Dental Northern Region and of Marketing of the European Dental Group. “It is a very worthwhile cause to support those in need, above all children. With this mission, SALCET not only contributes to their oral health but also their total health.”

This initiative is part of Henry Schein Cares, the company’s global corporate social responsibility programme. The initiative helps increase access to care for underserved populations through three focus areas: wellness, prevention, treatment and education; emergency preparedness and relief; and building health care capacity.
