NASSAU, Bahamas: The fourth Global Conference of MIS Implants Technologies, an Israeli dental implant manufacturer acquired by Dentsply Sirona in 2016, was held from Feb. 8 to 10 at the beautiful Atlantis Resort. During the three-day event, about 2,000 dentists from all over the world gathered to discover and learn more about new innovations in implant dentistry.
The meeting started with practical workshops on Thursday. The one half-day and four afternoon workshops focused on important topics such as rehabilitation of edentulous patients, monolithic vs. veneered implant reconstructions, bone augmentation, and 3-D implant planning and guided surgery. A spectacular welcome beach party, including the Dire Straits Experience concert, closed the first day.
Throughout Friday, many scientific and practical presentations on the most contemporary and important topics in implant dentistry were given as part of the main program. The first session focused on evolution and horizons in implant therapy, with Drs. Eric Van Dooren (Belgium) and Myron Nevins (U.S.) discussing the perio-prosthetic interface of implant restorations and peri-implantitis, respectively.
The following sessions introduced biological principles, esthetics and long-term prediction of implant therapy. Drs. Joeph Kan (U.S.), Mauro Fradeani (Italy) and Christian Stappert (Germany) shared their experiences, results and conclusions with the audience. The final session in the afternoon focused on the future of dentistry as the speakers tried to answer when, where and how it is best to use digital technology in a dental practice.
The program for Saturday was the unique TEDxMIS. This independently organized TED event is an original initiative by MIS created to share new ideas in dentistry. TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to “ideas worth spreading” and its talks feature the world’s leading thinkers and achievers. Through its TEDx program, it supports organizers in holding their own events to bring people together to spark deep discussions. At the MIS Global Conference, it was the first time that participants of a dental meeting joined the TEDx community.
At TEDxMIS, eight young dental professionals gave short presentations about dentistry from their own points of view. Their talks were not scientific or academic by their definition, and they did not deliver information or knowledge but important ideas, empowering and inspiring the audience to engage further. This was a truly innovative way of thinking about dentistry.
