KONSTANZ, Germany: Dentsply Sirona has taken the opportunity to recognise the work of some of the top dental students worldwide at its annual Global Clinical Case Contest (GCCC). The GCCC has continued to grow in size since its introduction in 2005, and more than 1,200 submissions from 140 universities were received for this year’s iteration of the competition.
First place was awarded to Uwe Walker of the University of Tübingen in Germany, who restored a total of 27 erosive and abrasive tooth defects using minimally invasive direct or indirect innovative composite techniques. Second place went to Dr Yannis Génique of the University of Bordeaux in France for an anterior smile design case that included reshaping a peg-shaped lateral incisor and replacing several ageing composite restorations. Mariangela Cernera of the University of Naples Federico II in Italy was awarded third place for her renewal of several large Class II composite restorations in the posterior region.
The award recipients of this year’s GCCC were announced at the beginning of June in Konstanz in Germany and were determined by a three-person jury. Prof. Rainer Seemann, Vice President of Global Clinical Affairs at Dentsply Sirona, was part of the jury, as were two outside experts, Drs Ian Cline and Gaetano Paolone.
The three prizewinners also received the opportunity to present their cases as part of a poster exhibition at the 2019 Oral Health Research Congress, held in Madrid in Spain from 19 to 21 September and organised by the Continental European and Scandinavian divisions of the International Association for Dental Research.
The GCCC is aimed at dental students with less than two years of clinical practice and a tutor from their university supports them. National or regional winners are chosen in the competition’s first round. They then participate in the global final, presenting their cases to the aforementioned jury.
“Clinical affairs play a key role in connecting our company with top talent globally. Through university collaborations and competitions such as the GCCC, we are bringing together Dentsply Sirona’s innovative portfolio of restorative solutions with excellent dentists of the next generation,” said Seemann.
The application phase for the next competition has already begun, and the deadline for registration varies from region to region. For further information, please contact your local Dentsply Sirona organisation.
