SOFIA, Bulgaria: Dental Tribune Bulgaria recently celebrated the tenth anniversary of its Smile of the Year national dental competition, which recognises achievements in dentistry and dental technology. With around 200 attendees, including distinguished national and international guests, this year’s ceremony was held in Bulgaria's capital Sofia.

Twenty-nine clinical reports were submitted for consideration under seven categories: composite restoration, ceramic restoration, pink aesthetics, orthodontic case, implantology case, complex aesthetic restoration and student case. Stavros Pelekanos, assistant professor at the Department of Prosthodontics, Dental School, University of Athens who was one of three members of the jury and presented several awards at the event, summed up the entries as being of “extremely high quality” and encouraged winners to submit their articles to international journals, adding “the world needs see more from Bulgaria’s best dental specialists."

Pelekanos went on to say that the competition is very well thought out and that it is especially beneficial for young dentists. He highlighted that it guides young professionals in terms of documenting their work and understanding the level of quality they should be aiming for. “Students, who are the youngest participants, learn early that they need to continually improve their work,” said Pelekanos.

The Smile of the Year award winners were as follows: composite restoration, Dr Sofien Raihi and dental technician Lora Georgieva; ceramic restoration, Dr Alexander Kiryakov and dental technician Dimitar Topalov; pink aesthetics, Dr Pavel Panov; orthodontic case, Dr Krasimir Avramov; implantology case, Dr Branimir Kirilov, Dr Sofien Riahi and dental technician Stefan Petrov; complex aesthetic restoration, Dr Ventseslav Stankov, dental technician Stefan Petrov, Dr Ivan Goryalov, Dr Nikolay Papanov, Dr Angel Georgiev and Dr Kaloyan Penchev; student case, Tsvetelina Stoyanova.

The event was attended by Dental Tribune International CEO Torsten Oemus and Ivoclar Vivadent Senior Director for Austria and Eastern Europe Gernot Schuller, and supported by Ivoclar Vivadent, Evgeny Stefanov EOOD and BioHorizons.

The award ceremony was held at the Cine Grand cinema in Sofia, Bulgaria.
