FLINT, Mich., U.S.: “One team, one dream” is the motto of Dr. Akira Senda, president of the International College of Dentists (ICD). As the world has faced a challenging year owing to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, Senda’s motto has resonated with ICD fellows worldwide, encouraging them to overcome the crisis and serve humankind together. In response to the pandemic, ICD has started an educational platform in order to connect with ICD fellows digitally.
The college’s global footprint has grown over the last century and now includes more than 12,000 fellows in 122 countries. This network has provided international cooperation and camaraderie and has helped fellows fulfill ICD’s mission of recognizing outstanding professional achievement and meritorious service while advocating humanitarian and educational initiatives for the last 100 years.
One of the college’s latest educational initiatives is ICD Online, an all-new digital platform producing webinars, videos and online content. The program was launched earlier this year in response to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in an effort to connect with ICD fellows and supporters virtually.
ICD Online’s first major project is a webinar series that provides important information from international expert panelists regarding SARS-CoV-2 and its impact on dentistry. The webinars released to date are “Confronting COVID-19,” which features six panelists speaking about the initial impact of the pandemic on oral health worldwide, and “A tale of two countries,” which features two panelists analyzing the effects of COVID-19 and the current situation in Germany and Italy. Topics covered include dental safety and infection control measures, best practices, impacts of the virus on the dental industry, dental education, patient care, and administrative management. These inaugural webinars have been viewed by hundreds on nearly every continent.
The next scheduled ICD Online webinar will be facilitated by ICD’s Get Smart About Antibiotics initiative and is planned for Sept. 16. This webinar will focus on the global crisis of antibiotic and antimicrobial resistance and the relevancy of this issue in dentistry, especially during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Two experts will provide a general overview of the antibiotics issue, give key takeaways to be implemented in dental clinical environments and offer solutions for patient communication.
As ICD fellows and industry experts serve at the forefront of the discussions relating to SARS-CoV-2 and oral health, many ICD groups have been involved with online programming and continuing education throughout this crisis, contributing to infection control protocols and best practices through various online platforms. Additionally, many fellows have been involved directly with SARS-CoV-2 relief efforts in their local and regional communities, including providing food aid through mobile pantries and raising funds for families suffering economically and medically. The college continues to evaluate the need for additional webinars related to the pandemic and how they may benefit oral health care.
The college is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year and it has already begun implementing its vision for the next century. The ICD Online platform is a crucial part of this vision, utilizing the “one team, one dream” approach in order not only to showcase the college’s leading dentists but also to offer innovative means for connection, education and research in an increasingly virtual world.

Just curious.
