Rapid improvement in the quality of ceramic implants has meant that they have become a viable alternative to the traditionally used titanium implants. TAV Dental is an industry leader in ceramic implantology, with its zirconia-based options offering aesthetic and metal-free solutions for dental practices worldwide. At the 2017 International Dental Show (IDS) in Cologne in Germany, Dental Tribune International spoke with TAV Dental CEO Oded Ben-Shabat and implant specialist Dr Michael Leistner about the company’s products and its plans for entering the European dental market.

How has IDS been for TAV Dental?
Oded Ben-Shabat: It has been excellent. The changes in market demand are on full display at IDS, as more and more dentists are looking for zirconia implant solutions and thus sought out our company’s stall. There are also more companies that want to be able to offer a zirconia implant option as well, and we have spoken to many of them. It will take some time to continue educating both dentists and patients on the benefits of zirconia implants over titanium-based options, but we have seen that the dental market is changing in a way that will benefit TAV Dental.

Dr Leistner, what is the treatment success rate for your patients who have opted for TAV Dental’s zirconia implants?
Leistner: I have had many patients in my practices receive zirconia implants and the results have been very positive. In some cases, their gingiva has grown on the zirconia, evidence of the material’s excellent osseointegration. TAV Dental’s implants are aesthetically pleasing as well, and the reduced risk of peri-implantitis compared with titanium implants means that there is a very high rate of success.

How is TAV Dental planning on increasing awareness among dentists and patients of the benefits of using its ceramic-based materials in restorative procedures?

Leistner: The main problem with spreading awareness of TAV Dental’s products lies in convincing dentists, not patients. As I am able to explain the benefits of ceramic implants quickly and easily, when I ask my patients whether they would prefer a metal or ceramic material for an implant, the vast majority opt for ceramic. Making sure that more dentists understand why zirconia is a great material, both mechanically and aesthetically, is crucial to increasing acceptance and awareness.

Oded Ben-Shabat: Two years ago, whenever I spoke with a dental professional about the possibilities of ceramic-based implants, he or she would often not even want to try it out. Now, there is increased awareness of these implants and greater willingness to use them in treatment. We see our role as having advanced from only making zirconia implants known to dentists to now involving educating dentists on their uses and benefits, mostly via online courses, so that they can be comfortable knowing that they are offering a high-quality alternative to metal-based implants.

How can European dentists interested in TAV Dental’s range of implants purchase these?
Oded Ben-Shabat: The easiest way is to order them through our website. We deliver the package with all the information and access to online training courses, which allows dentists to integrate our products into their practices quickly and easily. TAV Dental is focused on improving and developing its implant systems so that it can offer a complete and affordable solution for dental practices around the world.

Thank you very much for the interview.
