Prof. Xu, you have been working on developing the national and international scientific programme. Can you tell us about the process and team structure involved in such a complex task? The scientific programme for this congress has been jointly developed by the FDI Education Committee and the CSA with the goal of creating an outstanding and attractive scientific event for attendees. Building upon the official categories provided by the FDI committee, the CSA initiated surveys through its 40 specialised committees. These committees, composed of experts across all dental specialties, possess deep knowledge of both cutting-edge research directions and the clinical needs of dentists. Through these surveys, we collected topics of interest to Chinese dentists.
After discussion and confirmation with the FDI committee, the CSA and its 40 specialised committees launched both global and domestic speaker nomination and selection processes. A key requirement was that the programme incorporate the latest research developments in dentistry while addressing the clinical needs of practising dentists. Ultimately, 35 international speakers and 30 Chinese speakers have been invited to deliver keynote lectures.
Are there specific sessions in the programme that you are especially enthusiastic about? As an orthodontist, I am particularly interested in the orthodontics sessions. For FDIWDC25, we have organised 14 lectures in this field—ten presented by international experts and four by prominent Chinese clinicians. Topics will include early preventive and interceptive orthodontics, the management of malocclusions and the role of artificial intelligence in the future of orthodontic care.
FDIWDC25 is expected to be one of the biggest FDI congresses to date. What are your expectations? I anticipate that FDIWDC25 will be a landmark event, truly reflecting the scale and dynamism of global dentistry today. China has a large population and a rapidly advancing oral health industry, and this may be the largest gathering of dental professionals ever held under the FDI banner.
Attendees can expect an event of unrivalled scale and diversity: over 100 lectures, 500 exhibitors showcasing cutting-edge technology and participants from around the world. The congress also offers rare access to Chinese innovation, allowing international visitors to explore one of the fastest-growing dental markets and its unique clinical and research developments.
In addition, the scientific programme will offer depth and breadth, covering all specialties and featuring the latest advances in artificial intelligence, biomaterials, digital workflows and public health. Finally, the international mix of speakers and attendees is expected to foster valuable, meaningful collaboration, including knowledge exchange, research partnership and global networking. We believe that this congress will set a new standard for international dental events.
As a Chinese dental professional, what does it mean for you to see your country host this international congress? Hosting the FDIWDC in Shanghai is a source of immense pride and a significant milestone for the entire Chinese dental community. It recognises decades of dedication and remarkable progress in Chinese dentistry—in education, research, clinical excellence and a national commitment to improving the oral health of 1.4 billion people. It also underscores China’s emergence as a leading force in global oral health. This is also a historic opportunity to showcase China’s rich culture, modern advancements and warm hospitality to the global dental community—an invitation to strengthen understanding and foster long-term collaboration.
“We believe that this congress will set a new standard for international dental events.”
Do you have any tips for international attendees? Absolutely. To make the most of your FDIWDC25 Shanghai experience, plan ahead. Book accommodation near the National Exhibition and Convention Center for convenience and allocate time to explore iconic locations such as the Bund, Yu Garden and Pudong’s skyline. Also, use the metro. Shanghai’s metro system is highly efficient and easy to navigate.
Also, prepare essential apps before arrival. Download Alipay or WeChat Pay for mobile payments, Google Translate with offline packs and Didi, China’s ride-hailing app. Consider purchasing a local SIM card for data access.
I would also recommend exploring beyond the congress venue. While the National Exhibition and Convention Center is world-class, Shanghai’s culinary scene is not to be missed. Try local dishes such as Xiaolongbao—soup dumplings—and explore diverse regional cuisines.
Engage fully. Attend workshops, visit the exhibition hall more than once and participate in networking opportunities. Connect with Chinese colleagues—they are eager to exchange ideas.
My advice is to come with curiosity and an open mind. Shanghai is a city where ancient traditions meet modern innovation, and FDIWDC25 is the perfect gateway to experience it all while advancing your professional journey.
