LYON, France: A French company has released Y-Brush, an electric toothbrush that offers simultaneous whole mouth cleaning while reducing brushing time more than tenfold. According to the developers, the device removes dental plaque, food debris and bacteria from the gingival crevice more effectively than conventional toothbrushes.
Meticulously engineered along with specialists over the past three years, Y-Brush automatically cleans teeth according to the Bass technique using sonic vibration technology in only 10 seconds. The Y-Brush’s mouthpiece made of a food-grade silicone-like material simultaneously brushes all of the maxillary and then all of the mandibular teeth for 5 seconds, respectively, which is four times faster than with a manual or conventional electric toothbrush used for the recommended brushing time of 2 minutes.
The single-sided mouthpiece comes in four sizes and eliminates overaggressive scrubbing, one of the leading causes of gingival recession. The sonic vibrations power specialised nylon bristles to clean deep under the gingival margin instead of cleaning only the surfaces of teeth. During in vivo and in vitro testing, the company found that nylon bristles are the most effective at removing plaque and cleaning teeth compared with such materials as silicone strips. Owing to its flexible bristles with rounded ends, the Y-Brush does not damage the gingiva or the enamel and is designed in a way that allows for the bristles to reach into the interdental spaces and under the gingival margin into the gingival crevice. Finally, the study results showed that Y-Brush removes 15 per cent more plaque than a generic toothbrush does.
