Dear FDI delegates, congress attendees and the dental industry, I look forward to welcoming all of you to the 2018 FDI World Dental Congress (WDC), taking place this year in beautiful Buenos Aires in Argentina. FDI is honoured to be hosted by our friends and colleagues from the Argentine dental association, Confederación Odontológica de la República Argentina. This is the second time we are holding the congress in the Argentine capital—30 years since our last visit—and we look forward to another successful and enriching event.

The WDC offers a unique opportunity to meet with leaders, colleagues and peers from around the world to debate and exchange on the future of oral health. “A passion for many, a commitment for all” is the driving theme of this year’s WDC. We are thrilled to hear from a remarkable set of nearly 100 international and national experts, who will share their knowledge on a wide range of topics. Consult the scientific programme to learn more about special sessions and events.

For example, in line with FDI’s advocacy work to integrate oral health into the overall health agenda, we have organised a session with the World Health Organization and the NCD Alliance to tackle the alarming escalation of global sugar consumption. A panel of health experts, including high-level health advocates and civil society activists, will offer strategies to combat this global health threat through cost-effective and preventative interventions. I encourage you to carefully review this complete scientific programme and plan your itinerary in line with your interests and continuing dental education goals.

I also invite you to visit the four-day dental industry exhibition, which will present the latest in oral health technology and practices. The dental profession and the dental industry are essential partners in delivering oral health to populations around the world. Bridging the gap between the two is even more important today, as new materials and technologies are developed to accommodate the latest treatment philosophies.

Let’s remember that the WDC offers unmatched moments to consolidate long-term ties and friendships with like-minded colleagues from around the world—and celebrate being part of FDI’s rich worldwide network of dentistry and oral health. I hope that you will also find some time to sight-see in Buenos Aires, a city filled with opportunities for exploration and discovery, well known for its eclectic amalgam of cultures and traditions. I wish you an excellent congress experience! From all of us at FDI, thank you for joining us.

Dr Kathryn Kell,
FDI President
