July 1st and 2nd

Anatomical and surgical training with workshop on human cadavers

Objective

Lake Como Institute presents a unique and very practical two-day hands on dissection course for all professionals practicing or embarking on oral surgery and implantology where all lectures will focus on what really matters and will be directly applicable during the course. Working on frsh cadavers is really just like performing surgery on a live patient and the surgical skills can be practiced and improved without taking risks. After a concise theory part, the faculty will show the dissection techniques that will be performed by each participant. The most common surgical techniques will be illustrated and performed by attendees as well. Each professional will be assigned one skull. 90% of the course will be hands-on anatomical training and only 10% is theory.

Surgical techniques to be carried out

  • Standard implant placement
  • Alternatives to standard implant placement: short implants, trans-sinus implants, pterygoid implants
  • Alveolar socket preservation in post-extraction implant placement using regenerative materials
  • Free gingival graft
  • Connective tissue graft
  • Each participant will have the opportunity to study the CBCT of their specimen to better evaluate the anatomic structures dissected during the hands-on part: sinus height/width, antral septa incidence, alveolar antral artery (AAA) incidence, sinus floor antrostomy design, osteo-meatal-complex unit (OMC), trace canalis sinuosus, trace inferior alveolar canal, trace incisive canal, anterior loop of the mental nerve if present.
  • Surgical procedure on how to release flaps will be covered: superficial split thickness flap periosteal incision, innovative, coronally advanced buccal and lingual flaps.

Perio-implantology for the general practitioner:

How to enhance the esthetic zone

 

Objective

The esthetic implant rehabilitation of patients with esthetically and functionally compromised teeth frequently involves a multidisciplinary approach and is a clinical challenge. During recent years, treatment methods and options have changed and less invasive non surgical procedures are used in order to preserve soft tissue anatomy and minimize recession. The design of implants and prosthetic components have changed in order to minimize bone resorption and soft tissue alterations. This course will give practical guidelines that can be easily used in day-to-day clinical practice in order to help maximize peri-implant esthetics. Treatment algorithms will be outlined to help guide the clinician to choose the various procedures and techniques to predictably meet patient expectations.

Comprehensive periodontal surgery: esthetic and functional procedures for the general practitioner

 

Objective

This course is designed to provide clinicians with the scientific background and surgical techniques to perform periodontal surgery for ultimate esthetics and function. It will address the most predictable procedures to achieve an optimal clinical outcome.

  • Soft tissue grafting to correct gingival recession
  • Coronally repositioned flaps for root coverage

  • Donor site management
  • Etiology of excessive gingival display
  • Treatment options for the “Gummy Smile”

July 5th – Afternoon session 2.00 pm – 6.00 pm

First session: Non-surgical periodontal therapies

 

Objective

With the increasing evidence that many periodontal cases can be treated with a non surgical approach, should the General Practitioner be considered a hybrid DDS/RDH? We as professionals are in charge of assessing the severity of the periodontal disease in order to decide if a non surgical approach is adequate to treat a perio patient. Detailed knowledge of all the aspects of non surgical therapy gives us the opportunity to choose how to treat patients ourselves or to delegate, supervise and re-assess the treatment performed by dental hygienists.
