Founded on the same innovative business model as the successful US company EdgeEndo, DirectEndodontics, based in France, sells European-made endodontic products directly to dentists, delivering high quality at a substantially lower cost. In this interview, Dr Alessio Zanza, a young clinician and researcher who began developing his expertise in endodontic instruments during his undergraduate studies at the Sapienza University of Rome in Italy, speaks about how the quality-to-price ratio of endodontic files from DirectEndodontics helps improve access for new practitioners or those in under-resourced areas. He also emphasises the importance of understanding mechanical and metallurgical properties in order to select the ideal nickel–titanium (NiTi) file system.
Dr Zanza, how do DirectEndodontics files compare with conventional reciprocating and rotary NiTi instruments, and could you please explain how endodontic procedures may benefit from their specific mechanical and metallurgical features?
DirectEndodontics files indeed represent an intriguing option in the field of endodontics, especially when compared with conventional reciprocating and rotary NiTi instruments. Nowadays, the market is full of NiTi rotary or reciprocating instruments, and it can be challenging for clinicians to decide which option is best for them. For this reason, an in-depth understanding of the files’ mechanical and metallurgical properties is essential for choosing the ideal NiTi system. In this regard, DirectEndodontics files leverage high-quality metallurgical techniques and geometric design to enhance the mechanical performance of the files. For example, Direct X Gold and Direct-R Mi Gold present an optimum balance between cyclic fatigue and torsional resistance and between flexibility and cutting efficiency. All these properties are assured by the proven quality of the company’s manufacturing.

What is the clinical efficacy of DirectEndodontics files in complex root canal anatomies? Can dentists really keep using their current techniques when they transition to these files, and how much practice is necessary to learn to use these files?
DirectEndodontics files represent a promising advancement in endodontic instrumentation, particularly in addressing endodontic anatomies with impressive simplicity. Their clinical efficacy in such cases stems from several key factors and innovations in file design and metallurgical properties developed by the manufacturer. High cyclic fatigue and torsional resistance, combined with enhanced flexibility and cutting efficiency, are essential attributes for navigating intricate canal systems without compromising instrument integrity and for avoiding intra-canal separation or other iatrogenic errors.
Regarding transitioning to DirectEndodontics files, dentists can indeed keep using many of their current techniques when they incorporate these instruments into their practice. DirectEndodontics files offer clinicians the flexibility of utilising both rotary and reciprocating motion, providing versatility in addressing different clinical scenarios and operator preferences. This adaptability enhances the efficiency of endodontic procedures while minimising the necessary learning associated with transitioning between different systems. However, it is important to consider the clinician’s individual preferences. This goes beyond scientific research and mechanical and metallurgical properties. Every clinician has his or her subjective preferences and should select the endodontic system that best suits his or her clinical practice.
Considering your significant contribution to the field, how do you see the integration of DirectEndodontics’ files influencing the future of endodontic practice? Are there any particular advancements or innovations in these files that you find particularly transformative?
That is a very hard question to answer! Influencing the future of endodontic practice is profoundly challenging. We should consider that the success rates of endodontic treatments have not changed significantly in the last decade, despite technological innovation. This is not a critique; it simply reflects today’s high level of clinical practice. Certainly, major changes—unless there are sensational scientific discoveries—occur very gradually, meaning that we are probably in the midst of slow improvements that are difficult to notice. Despite this, one point is clear: medicine and dentistry are going in the direction of minimally invasive procedures, and DirectEndodontics aligns with this trend by offering conservative rotary and reciprocating instruments. The concept of preserving hard tissue without compromising the quality of chemomechanical disinfection during root canal treatments is capturing our attention, and the future of endodontics is going in that direction.
DirectEndodontics emphasises the cost-effectiveness of its files. From your perspective, how does the affordability of these files influence their accessibility and adoption among dental professionals, especially those in the early stages of their careers or in areas with limited resources?
The mechanical and metallurgical properties of DirectEndodontics files are complemented by a very competitive price. This affordability enhances accessibility for dental clinicians. DirectEndodontics provides products of the highest quality at economical prices, guaranteeing a unique quality-to-price ratio in the market.
