PARIS, France: Every year in November, a few days before the congress of the French Dental Association, the Palais des Congrès de Paris hosts the Les Journées de l’Orthodontie orthodontic meeting. The 21st edition, which started on 9 November and ended today, was devoted to the role of orthodontics in multidisciplinary medical care of children.
The meeting began with two pre-conference courses. The first was on musculo-articular disorders and sleep-disordered breathing, and was presented by Dr Chris Farrell, who developed a single-sided intra-oral device used worldwide in myofunctional orthodontics. He discussed the latest developments in diagnostic procedures for malocclusions, temporomandibular joint dysfunction syndrome and sleep-disordered breathing, which he has been treating for 30 years.
The second course addressed the question “Can we do without mini-implants in orthodontics?”. The answer to this was discussed by the presenters, Drs François Darqué (France) and Skander Ellouze (Tunisia), during their lecture.
In addition to numerous papers and training presented by international speakers, more than 50 posters by academics and dental professionals from all around the world were exhibited in the corridors of the Palais. Conference attendees also had the opportunity to participate in industry workshops and tutorials. The Fédération Française d’Orthodontie [the French federation of orthodontics], which organizes this event, brings together 11 organisations in order to represent the profession of orthodontics and improve the quality of orthodontics. It pursues these goals in particular in hosting the Les Journées de l’Orthodontie. “The federation works essentially through committees, with a scientific committee headed by Prof. Olivier Sorel that brings together a representative of each scientific member,” said Alain Béry, administrator of the federation. Béry continued by saying that the “strength of the Fédération Française d’Orthodontie lies its belief in values, the camaraderie that we can share, the pleasure of working for others and volunteering, and orthodontics”.
