EDINBURGH, UK: With a traditional bagpipe player, the European Orthodontic Society (EOS) welcomed the attendees to this year's congress at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC) on Sunday. Hosted in Scotland’s history-charged capital, the five-day event, which is on until 21 June, has brought together orthodontists not only from Europe but from all over the world.

Founded in 1907, the society aims to advance all aspects of orthodontics and its relations with the collateral arts and sciences for the public benefit, seek the furtherance of orthodontics amongst all branches of the dental profession working in private practice, hospitals and universities throughout Europe and bring orthodontists from all over the world together at an annual event.

With this year’s congress, the EOS has once again attracted a large number of orthodontists from all over, including Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand and the US.

The congress events are spread out among some of Edinburgh’s most interesting venues, such as the Usher Hall, where the opening ceremony was held. Scotland’s only five-star concert hall is an Edwardian building that first opened in 1914.

For the president’s reception, congress attendees were invited to the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh campus. Besides enjoying traditional Scottish music and dance performances, as well as a variety of street food, the orthodontists had the opportunity to visit the Surgeons’ Hall Museums. They consist of the Wohl Pathology Museum, the History of Surgery Museum and the Dental Collection.

At the EICC, the speakers are addressing a large variety of topics, including contemporary treatment mechanics/efficacy of orthodontics; lingual orthodontics; interdisciplinary orthodontics/orthognathic surgery; impacted teeth and their treatment/3-D imaging; patient-centred research/quality of life and orthodontics; unwanted side effects of orthodontic treatment/iatrogenic effects; sleep apnoea/gnathology; and craniofacial development.

Among the keynote speakers are Prof. Mauro Farella, Chair of Orthodontics at the University of Otago in New Zealand; Drs Giulio Alessandri-Bonetti, associate professor and Chairman of the Department of Orthodontics and Dean of the School of Dental Hygiene at the University of Bologna in Italy; Maisa Seppala, clinical lecturer in orthodontics at King’s College London in the UK; and Prof. Guy Willems, Chair of the Orthodontic Section of the Department of Oral Health Sciences and Programme Director of the combined Master/Clinical Postgraduate Training Programme in Orthodontics at KU Leuven in Belgium.

The industry exhibition is an accompanying part of EOS 2018. It offers orthodontists the opportunity to see the latest products on the dental market and speak to company representatives.

As part of the networking programme, congress participants have the opportunity to attend a sightseeing tour by bus, a disco, a gala dinner at the National Museum of Scotland, the Silver Mill competition and a golf tournament.

The next European Orthodontic Society Congress will be held in Nice in France from 17 to 22 June 2019.
