GENEVA, Switzerland: Although established in 1951 already, the International Association of Dental Students (IADS) has found it difficult to connect with the Latin American student base. In an effort to address this, IADS recently appointed a director for this region, Leonardo Meza Palma of Chile. With lectures in Peru and Columbia, Palma has already managed to reach out to a wide range of dental students and professionals.

“It has been two months since I was entrusted with the responsibility of regional director. It has been an interesting experience to take up the challenge of starting to build a Latin American block of dental students. With the exchange of ideas with my peers from other countries, it is motivating to know that we have the same goal: unity and collaboration for the good of dentistry and our patients,” said Palma.

On 12 March, Palma gave a presentation about IADS to the Asociación Colombiana de Facultades de Odontología [Colombian association of dental schools], putting forward the ideas and objectives of IADS and specifically its plans in Latin America. Later that month, Palma travelled to Lima in Peru, where he presented IADS at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, speaking to the only scientific society of dental students in the country.

Regarding this last event on 20 March, Palma noted that it was great to be able to contribute by giving two lectures, “Challenges of a scientific society of students” and “Organising congresses and events in dentistry without money”. He added that his presentations were well received and that the future for IADS looks very promising.

Going forward, Palma pointed to the upcoming FDI World Dental Federation congress in Argentina as one of the major events essential to help build upon the foundations being set and the involvement of American students who are eager to contribute to the strengthening of ties with their Latin American neighbours.
