CARASCO, Italy: Italian medical device manufacturer Mectron has announced that it has signed a framework agreement with Hu-Friedy, part of US-based HuFriedyGroup, for the sale of its dental business. Under the agreement, Mectron will continue manufacturing dental products for HuFriedyGroup at its plant in Carasco and will focus its own business on medical applications. Completion of the transaction is expected by the end of 2026.
Mectron’s manufacturing plant in Italy, will continue producing its dental product range for HuFriedyGroup under a supply agreement.
The transaction covers Mectron’s dental business in Italy, which will be transferred to a newly established company and sold in full to HuFriedyGroup, as well as its German subsidiary Mectron Deutschland, excluding its medical activities, and the dental activities of its US subsidiary Piezosurgery. The commercial and research and development teams dedicated to dental products will also join HuFriedyGroup.
Mectron’s plant in Carasco, where the company has designed and manufactured its devices since 1979, will continue producing the full dental range for HuFriedyGroup under a multi-year supply agreement. A transitional services agreement will support continuity for customers and distributors.
Through HuFriedyGroup’s distribution network in approximately 100 countries, Mectron’s dental technology will become available to more dental professionals worldwide. Mectron currently serves around 50 countries through its own sales network. The transaction builds on a collaboration established in 2023, when HuFriedyGroup began distributing Mectron’s piezoelectric scaling and air-polishing devices under its own brand in the US and Canada. “Mectron’s pioneering technologies are a strong strategic fit with our portfolio and expand our ability to support clinicians across the full continuum of preventive, implant and surgical care,” said Robert Woolley, CEO of HuFriedyGroup.
Following the planned sale, Mectron will focus on its medical activities, including the development of piezoelectric surgical technologies.
Antonio Bolfo, chairman of Mectron’s holding company, said: “With this agreement, our dental products join the house of one of the most respected brands in global dentistry, while their manufacturing stays where it has always been: in our plant, with our people and our know-how. It confirms our ties to the region and gives Italian technology the chance to reach far more of the world. Mectron will keep growing in the medical field, where piezoelectric technology still has a great deal to offer surgery.”
Mectron will concentrate on its medical business, established in 2009 around its PIEZOSURGERY systems for applications including oral and maxillofacial surgery, ear, nose and throat surgery, neurosurgery, spinal surgery and hand and foot surgery. The company will also continue as a manufacturing and technology partner for HuFriedyGroup’s dental products. Its remaining research and development and manufacturing activities will remain in Italy.
Completion of the transaction is subject to the fulfilment of customary closing conditions and applicable legal requirements. Until then, the two companies will continue to operate independently, with no immediate changes for customers, distributors or suppliers.
