Non-peroxide whitening strips offer bright competition

However, measuring the effectiveness  of whitening agents can prove challenging because tooth whiteness is affected by several factors, such as tooth wetness and shine, the colour of adjacent structures and the angle of illumination during colour evaluation. This double-blinded, randomised, controlled clincal study aimed to evaluate three whitening strips—Lumineux Whitening Strips with essential oils and Dead Sea salt, placebo strips and the popular Crest 3DWhitestrips with hydrogen peroxide—over the course of 14 days of application, focusing on their effects on tooth sensitivity, oral tissue, and tooth colour and lustre.

The 90 participants, aged 18–30 with 12 healthy anterior teeth, were randomly allocated to the strip kinds and used them daily. Assessments were made at baseline and at seven and 14 days by an experienced dentist, and the participants completed daily questionnaires to report any perceived effects. Data captured included daily symptoms, dentist’s observations on oral health and sensitivity, and tooth colour and lustre.

Both the Lumineux and Crest groups displayed significant whitening effects after seven and 14 days. The Crest participants, however, reported higher sensitivity, oral burning and soreness. Dental examinations revealed no adverse effects from any treatment. Moreover, Lumineux’s treatment improved tooth lustre, which was found to significantly influence participant satisfaction. The study concluded that non-peroxide strips offer comparable whitening results to those of peroxide-based strips but with fewer side effects.
