For the 2026 International Osteology Symposium, at least 3,000 participants and more than 90 prominent speakers from over 80 countries are expected. (Video: Osteology Fundation)
“Beyond Regeneration” is the guiding theme of the 2026 International Osteology Symposium, which will take place in Vienna in Austria from 23 to 25 April. Placing the Osteology Foundation’s focus on oral tissue regeneration in the broader context of comprehensive patient care and long-term outcomes, the symposium promises an outstanding programme of evidence-based insights and practical skills. In this interview with the Osteology Foundation, the symposium scientific chairs, Dr Lisa Heitz-Mayfield and Prof. Anton Sculean, share what participants can look forward to.
Prof. Sculean and Dr Heitz-Mayfield, how is the event theme reflected in the programme? Prof. Sculean: The Osteology Foundation has always been dedicated to oral tissue regeneration, but this theme broadens that focus. Ultimately, it is about one goal: better patient outcomes. The programme is designed to go beyond what you would expect from a conventional congress and to deliver on that promise. Dr Heitz-Mayfield: Exactly—and we do this in several ways. First, we have put a strong emphasis on engagement. Participants will not just sit through lectures; they will be able to vote during sessions, take part in round-table discussions and gain hands-on experience in workshops. Second, we have ensured clinical relevance. It is not only about technical skills but also about drawing on interdisciplinary perspectives and the insights of our leading partner associations. The programme will even include consensus guidelines that distil the latest evidence into practical treatment recommendations. Finally, we have looked to the future of the field by giving the next generation a true voice. Their workshops and sessions will bring fresh topics and formats to keep us future-oriented.
“Periodontists, surgeons, orthodontists, general dentists—anyone with an interest in oral tissue regeneration will benefit.”
Prof. Anton Sculean
Who should attend the symposium? Prof. Sculean: The beauty of the programme is that it is inclusive. Periodontists, surgeons, orthodontists, general dentists—anyone with an interest in oral tissue regeneration will benefit. Dr Heitz-Mayfield: That is right. Whether you are just starting your career or you are an experienced clinician, there is something here for you. We will cover cutting-edge techniques, but also take time to discuss limitations and risks openly. By combining interdisciplinary, patient-centred approaches with the latest digital tools, the content will really speak to clinicians across all levels of practice.
How will the programme balance scientific insights with clinical applications? Will there be opportunities for attendees to practise what they have learned? Dr Heitz-Mayfield: Absolutely. Participants will receive condensed, evidence-based guidance and then be shown how it translates into practice. A highlight this time will be the recorded live surgery sessions. Presenters will use real cases from daily practice to demonstrate comprehensive treatment planning in which the patient’s needs—not just the technical steps—take priority. Four sessions will guide participants through the entire clinical process, reinforcing that patient-reported outcomes are the compass for every decision.

How are young professionals involved in the symposium programme? Dr Heitz-Mayfield: They have been active from the very beginning. The next-generation team helped to shape the programme by designing sessions and workshops specifically for early-career clinicians. Also, early-career clinician and researcher Dr Jeniffer Perussolo is part of the scientific committee, ensuring that the perspective of young dentists is firmly embedded in the programme. Prof. Sculean: Young professionals will also be on stage as co-moderators with senior experts. That mix sparks lively discussions and ensures that fresh perspectives are part of the dialogue. Dr Heitz-Mayfield: We have also made sure that the event is accessible. The symposium is offering a reduced fee for young professionals, allowing early-career participants to save up to 75% on registration—an unprecedented opportunity to engage with high-level education.
Will the programme offer a global perspective? Dr Heitz-Mayfield: Very much so. More than 90 renowned speakers from around the world will be joining us. We have also worked closely with our global partner organisations such as the European Federation of Periodontology and American Academy of Periodontology, which will present treatment guidelines and consensus papers. This will ensure that participants benefit from the latest science as well as from internationally recognised recommendations across all indications in oral tissue regeneration.
Why should dental professionals attend this in-person congress when there are so many short online events? Prof. Sculean: One word: community. Online events are valuable, but nothing can replace the energy of being in the same room, sharing ideas, exchanging experiences and building networks. Oral tissue regeneration is moving to the centre of dental practice worldwide, and this congress offers a front-row seat to that transformation.
