VERONA, Italy: On Friday, 3 May, Dr Pier Francesco Nocini, Professor of Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Verona in Italy, opened the first Giornate Veronesi, a German–Italian congress on implantology and general dentistry. The event was hosted by the University of Verona and the German specialist publisher OEMUS MEDIA.

The opening programme of the congress comprised five lectures given at the University of Verona. Over 150 participants and speakers from Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Austria and the US were in attendance. In his opening lecture, Nocini discussed the possibilities of modern oral rehabilitation of the edentulous, atrophied maxilla using zygomatic implants. With the aid of remarkable case studies, Nocini demonstrated how sustainable implant prosthetic reconstructions could be achieved in this borderline area of maxillofacial surgery, and that patients who had previously been severely traumatised were able to experience social and psychological rehabilitation.

After the lectures at the university, the two-day training event continued its programme in the congress resort of Villa Quaranta in Valpolicella. A live broadcast of a surgery from Switzerland demonstrating external sinus lift with a sinus implant without secondary materials was followed by three-stage table clinics on 15 different dental topics.

The second part of the scientific lecture programme continued on Saturday. Dr Giorgio Lombardo of the Department of Periodontal Surgery at the University of Verona, had played a key role in organising and setting up the conference. As part of his programme for his German peers, he gave a lecture on the possibilities of minimally invasive implant treatment by means of short implants. Using numerous case studies, Lombardo discussed how short implants could also be used for the long-term treatment of extreme atrophic situations.

Dr Mauro Marincola from Rome and Dr Mauro Labanca from Milan each demonstrated by their presentations the importance of Italian contributions to a meaningful discussion about key concepts in modern implantology and oral surgery.

The second Giornate Veronesi congress will be held in Villa Quaranta on 1 and 2 May 2020.
