Dental News - Second Finnish Innovation Award recognises outstanding dental products

HELSINKI, Finland: Presented at the Finnish Dental Congress and Exhibition, the Innovaatio (Innovation) Award once again recognised new products, services and technologies that have improved patient safety and working conditions for dentists. This year’s winner is MeridentOptergo for its range of optical solutions for dentists. In addition, two products received honourable mentions from the award jury: the ProModel technology from Planmeca and Medrian’s HELPie bite blocks.

MeridentOptergo was chosen by the jury of dental professionals in recognition of the company’s long-term achievements in the development of visionary optical products, as well as its excellent customer service, Riikka Luomanpää, communications officer at Messukeskus Helsinki expo and convention centre, told Dental Tribune Online.

“MeridentOptergo made the use of loupes a standard among Finnish dentists,” commented the jury regarding their decision. The company’s prism glasses and dental loupes aim to improve the vision of dentists and surgeons, while taking into account the latest ergonomic principles to enable clinicians to work without back, neck or shoulder pain—musculoskeletal symptoms that are very common in dental care workers.

Moreover, the jury recognised Finnish dental manufacturer Planmeca’s ProModel service with an honourable mention. Using the 3-D technology, patient-specific surgical guides and skull models are designed and created from CBCT/CT images. ProModel supported the first facial tissue transplant procedure in the history of the Nordic countries, which was conducted earlier this year.

The second honourable mention went to HELPie, a flexible mouthpiece developed by Finnish company Medrian. The solution automatically adjusts to the patient’s mouth and keeps it open without it being unpleasant, according to the company. Through a special cone, the patient’s tongue is directed away from the work area without restricting its movement, as the tongue can be moved freely within the cone.

First introduced in 2015, the Innovation Award is given out annually and recognises new technologies that improve dentists’ working conditions, patient safety or patient care.

The Finnish Dental Congress and Exhibition, which took place from 24 to 26 November this year, is the largest dental event of its kind in Finland. The exhibition is organised by Messukeskus Helsinki, and the training sessions and lectures are organised by the Finnish Dental Society Apollonia. In 2016, about 8,500 dentists, dental nurses, dental hygienists and other dental professionals, as well as students, attended the event.
