Dental News - BIOLASE and TeamSmile co-host series of oral health events

LOS ANGELES/KANSAS CITY, Mo., U.S.: BIOLASE, a medical device company and a global leader in dental lasers, and TeamSmile, an advocacy group that partners oral health professionals with professional athletic organizations to support dental care for underserved children, first launched their partnership program in 2018. Since then, the two organizations have co-hosted several oral health events to support different communities through charity work.

Just last month, BIOLASE and TeamSmile teamed up with the American football team Los Angeles Chargers and hosted an oral health fair in which nearly 300 students throughout the Los Angeles Unified School District were given free access to advanced dental care. A few weeks after the event took place, the two organizations partnered with the Sporting Kansas City soccer team and hosted a similar event that supported 300 children from Kansas City public schools. Prior to the event, BIOLASE donated two dental lasers to TeamSmile in honor of the continued partnership. The lasers were used to assist with oral care on the day of the program and beyond.

“We’ve seen the positive impact that our programs can have firsthand and have heard kids, parents and providers rave about the outcomes after the day comes to an end,” said TeamSmile Executive Director John McCarthy.

Both events were part of a greater series of events that BIOLASE has hosted with TeamSmile in an effort to educate families on a more advanced, less invasive dentistry through the use of Waterlase dental lasers. The oral health fairs provided children with the opportunity to receive free screenings, preventive care, radiographs and laser treatments on-site. They were also instrumental in demonstrating that dental procedures do not always have to result in dental anxiety among patients, nor do they always have to be associated with a painful experience during dental treatment.

“Our goal is to serve members of communities across the country by providing access to innovative oral health solutions,” Norbe said. “Partnering with TeamSmile allows us to simultaneously treat and educate kids from different neighborhoods across the country. Now, with our first program in Kansas City and the support of Sporting Kansas City and TeamSmile, we are able to extend our care and education to a new group of children,” he concluded.
