BIRMINGHAM, UK: The British Dental Conference and Dentistry Show (BDCDS) took place from 12 to 13 May, and the UK dental sector attended in strong numbers to make the most of all that the multi-pronged event had to offer. The congress programme and educational sessions were well attended, and company booths were busy exhibiting the latest advancements in oral healthcare tools, consumables, products and technologies.

The National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham was packed with dental professionals on both days of the exhibition, and there was a major focus on product presentations and demonstrations. The newest dental technologies were on hand, and visitor interest was also piqued by established, trusted products. The Waterpik Water Flosser, for example, is a clinically proven interdental cleaning technology that is ideal for use in patients having crowns, bridges, appliances or implants, and Waterpik educators were on hand to share practical and scientific knowledge about the product. In friendly British style, Waterpik suggested that dental teams book a “lunch and learn” appointment for Waterpik to visit their dental clinic to explain more about the technology.

A tradition of low abrasiveness from Arm & Hammer

According to Arm & Hammer, tradition and natural ingredients are as relevant today as ever. The Church & Dwight company offered a product demonstration of Arm & Hammer’s new 100% Natural Baking Soda Toothpaste range, which uses baking soda as its hero ingredient. A company spokesperson used Petri dishes and competitor toothpastes to show a visible difference between toothbrushing with a toothpaste that contained baking soda and one that that did not. He explained that Arm & Hammer had started its business with baking soda when the company was founded in England in 1846 and pointed out that certain myths surrounding the natural ingredient needed to be dispelled or confirmed. Particularly relevant in the context of oral care is the myth that baking soda in toothpaste is abrasive to teeth. He said that, in fact, the ingredient has a low abrasiveness that delivers disruptive action to help remove plaque biofilm from teeth without scratching them. Another story was grounded in fact, however: the Statue of Liberty in New York City was indeed cleaned using baking soda—100 tonnes—in 1986. The spokesperson said: “That proves what I mentioned earlier. We don’t see a scratched Statue of Liberty, do we?”

Punching for the profession at Howden’s booth

At the booth of specialist insurance broker Howden, dental professionals had the chance to don boxing gloves instead of rubber gloves as a symbolic show of self-determination and strength in fending off indemnity claims. The exercise proved popular, and company representatives held a presentation related to Howden’s customisable insurance and dental indemnity policies.

New bonding solutions from 3M

Global dental brand 3M introduced two new products at the event which generated a great deal of interest from attendees. These were 3M Scotchbond Universal Plus Adhesive and 3M RelyX Universal Resin Cement. The products were demonstrated at the company’s stand, and dental professionals were encouraged to experience first-hand how the products could simplify indirect restorative procedures and increase their efficacy. Company representative Dr Akit Patel said that the products were more hygienic and easier to clean than previous solutions, that they resulted in less plastic waste owing to their ergonomic design and that a new micro-mixing tip resulted in 80% less wasted cement.

UK dentistry gearing up for Straumann Charity Bike Ride 2022

Straumann Group exhibited a number of solutions at the event, such as the Anthogyr Multi Level and Helix Grand Morse implant systems and new advancements in the ClearCorrect clear aligner system. UK dentistry is known for its philanthropic spirit, and the company held true to this quality when it announced the launch of the Straumann Charity Bike Ride 2022, a five-day cycling challenge along the Spanish coast that will raise essential funds for the dental charity Dentaid. Straumann said in a press release that the 500 mile (804 km) bike ride will put dental professionals and friends of the profession to the test. The coast-to-coast cycling event across north-eastern Spain will take place from 6 to 10 September, beginning in Bilbao and ending in Sitges, and the aim of the event will be to help Dentaid purchase a new mobile dental unit to help provide oral care to vulnerable communities in the UK.

Dental teams are already in training, and the event is drawing nearer; therefore, readers are encouraged to make a contribution on the Dentists in Lycra 2022 JustGiving fundraising page.
