Dental profession delighted to be back at BDCDS

BIRMINGHAM, UK: Despite the unavoidable two-year interlude, the 2022 British Dental Conference and Dentistry Show (BDCDS) came back stronger than ever. Thousands of professionals gathered at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham for two busy days of learning and networking, and all participants enjoyed the positive atmosphere.

The extensive programme offered a wealth of information and inspiration, including an array of highlights for all members of the dental team. Theatres were full, and audiences made the most of the opportunity to hear and engage with world-class speakers.

As anticipated, the British Dental Association (BDA) Theatre was a hit with attendees, owing to the wide array of topics that were presented there. One of the most well-received sessions was that featuring Dr Finlay Sutton, who discussed techniques for crafting complete and partial dentures. Dr Chloe Richardson, a general dentist at St Mary’s Dental Practice in Ely, commented: “Dr Sutton was an excellent speaker. He provided fantastic tips which are appropriate for day-to-day use in general practice, as well as aspirational goals for the future. Also, it was great to bring in mindfulness and importance of sharing heart-sink cases as well as our successes.”

Dr Amit Patel was one of the speakers in the BDA Theatre who attracted a large audience. He commented on-site: “It has been amazing to interact with people face to face again. I am very lucky to have been able to lecture in the BDA Theatre. I am pleased that people want to hear about periodontics, and there are many great speakers!”

The British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry Aesthetic and Digital Dentist Theatre proved just as popular with attendees, who were treated to a comprehensive programme covering all aspects of cosmetic dentistry. Drs Riaz Yar, Sanjay Sethi and Nikhil Sethi discussed functional indirect posterior onlays in one particularly well-attended session.

Attendees had access to an array of further presentations delivered at the British Association of Private Dentistry Private Dentist Theatre, the Speciality Interest Theatre, the Next Generation Conference, the Core Continuous Professional Development Theatre, the Compliance Clinic and the Aligner Lounge. The Dental Business Theatre and business skills workshops offered insight into business aspects of running a dental practice, and experts in the field provided useful tips for practice owners and clinic managers.

The event also included theatres that were dedicated to dental nurses, dental hygienists and dental therapists, and each programme was tailored specifically to individuals working in these roles. Ms Rebecca Power, who spoke in the Dental Nurses’ Forum, commented: “I loved the Dental Nurses’ Forum setting. All venue staff were great and supportive—and the organising team was amazing. I would 100% recommend that others should attend the event, and I would love to attend the theatre again myself.”

Having attended several sessions in the Hygienist and Therapist Symposium, dental hygienist Jenny Dudley-Ford of Cumbria commented that the symposium provided ample useful information and professional development opportunities. “Everyone was really friendly. There were good stand holders and freebies. I’m going home excited to get back into surgery. I have attended the show many times and will be back,” she said.

In addition to excellent professional development opportunities, the event presented an extensive trade exhibition, where stands were held by hundreds of dental manufacturers, suppliers and providers of dental training and services. In the halls, attendees were able to discover the latest products and materials, engage with product experts, enjoy on-stand competitions, obtain free samples and access show-only promotions. The bustling atmosphere made for a very positive environment that reflected the joy of attendees finally being able to return to large-scale in-person dental events.

Those who attended or exhibited at BDCDS will likely agree that the profession is ready to move on from the past couple of years and towards to a much brighter future. The event was an excellent opportunity to bring everyone together again, and it provided a springboard for career development over the coming year for the dental team.
