SEOUL, South Korea: Globally, the population aged 65 and over is growing faster than all other age groups. According to data published by the United Nations, one in six people in the world will be over age 65 by 2050. Parallel to the growth of the geriatric population, the demand for overdentures has increased in recent decades.
Overdentures offer multiple benefits for edentulous patients. Compared with conventional dentures, they offer improved aesthetics and enhanced quality of life. For instance, patients with dentures supported by dental implants have increased biting force and experience less bone loss than do patients with conventional complete dentures. However, higher costs of overdenture treatment might represent a barrier for patients.
South Korean company Daekwang IDM is a manufacturer that offers a high-quality and cost-effective overdenture attachment solution: Kerator, which is compatible with all implant systems.
“Decades ago, the first start of the overdenture was the stud type, where ball or socket types were common. However, even if it is damaged due to side effects caused by frequent breakage, silicone or rubber that can be easily replaced has been used in place of balls or sockets,” said Prof. Lee Sung-Bok from the Department of Biomaterials and Prosthodontics at the Kyung Hee University Dental Hospital in Seoul. “However, with the release of semi-permanent overdentures using magnets for many years, elderly patients and patients with hand disorders can easily remove their appliances, resulting in high satisfaction. With a myriad of choices for overdentures available today, it is important that clinicians select the best solution for each individual case,” he continued.
More information about Kerator, which is currently sold in over 60 countries worldwide, can be found at www.kerator.com.
