FRANKFURT AM MAIN, Germany: Once considered a niche solution, 3D printing is now an integral process for dental laboratories, practices and clinics. Supporting the fabrication of a range of products, including precise models, functional splints and complex prostheses, additive manufacturing (AM) has developed into a key technology. The digital workflow—involving intra-oral scanning, CAD and 3D printing—not only enhances patient care but also improves efficiency, cost-effectiveness and sustainability.

AM has been used for more than 20 years to produce crowns and bridges, but recent advances in materials, machine precision and software integration have significantly expanded its applications. Mass production of aligners, whether printed directly or fabricated indirectly, highlights the scale of its potential.

Compared with traditional manufacturing methods, AM can shorten production times and reduce material costs, particularly when working with high-value materials. With increasing automation and standardisation, it can also help address the shortage of skilled dental technicians. In addition, artificial intelligence in AM supports design processes, automated optimisation and quality control.

Market figures underscore the rapid growth in adoption and applications of AM in dentistry. Demand for digital dentures in North America is rising, and the region is expected to account for a 36.8% market share this year, driven by increasing interest in innovative solutions, particularly those using advanced resin-based technologies.1 In comparison, Europe is projected to hold a 24.5% share of the global market this year, and its market growth is linked to demand for durable, accurate and customisable dentures.1 According to Precedence Research, the global dental 3D-printing market was valued at US$3.94 billion (€3.78 billion*) in 2024 and is projected to expand at a double-digit rate.2

Dentistry is especially suited to AM because the components are typically small, complex and customised. Experts expect further advances in multi-material printers and in polymers with ceramic-like properties to broaden applications in the near future. For dental practices and laboratories, AM innovations present substantial opportunities. Success depends on understanding technologies and trends, selecting suitable materials and adopting efficient processes.

Formnext 2025: Knowledge and innovation hub

Formnext, the world’s leading trade fair for AM and state-of-the-art industrial production, will be held from 18 to 21 November in Frankfurt am Main. International exhibitors will showcase the latest developments, including specialised dental solutions. An extensive supporting programme, featuring special showcases and a free conference, will offer insights into new applications, technologies and trends in dental AM.

For general and specialist dentists and laboratories, AM is increasingly becoming the standard solution for selected applications. Embracing this technology can streamline workflows, enhance patient satisfaction and provide a competitive edge.
