BRUSSELS, Belgium: The inaugural European Gum Health Day, held on 12 May, has been hailed as a great step forward in public health education by its organisers, the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP). With 27 international EFP-affiliated periodontal societies participating in a wide array of informative activities, the initiative aimed to raise public awareness about the importance of maintaining periodontal health.
Previously known as European Periodontology Day, European Gum Health Day 2017 was guided by its slogan, “Fighting periodontal disease together”. A multitude of public events, social media campaigns, media interviews and free dental check-ups in countries as diverse as Portugal, Morocco and the Netherlands, contributed to communicating this message effectively by emphasising the prevalence of periodontal disease and the role individuals can play to prevent it.
Gernot Wimmer, president of the EFP, and Filippo Graziani, member of the EFP’s executive committee, thanked those who had volunteered to make European Gum Health Day 2017 a success. European Gum Health Day 2018 is scheduled to take place again on May 12.
