VIENNA, Austria: The European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) recently hosted the 11th EuroPerio, the world’s leading congress in periodontics and implant dentistry, at the VIECON centre (formerly Messe Wien) in Vienna. The four-day event drew more than 10,000 participants from 107 countries, underscoring the global significance of the discipline and the continued growth of the community.

EuroPerio11 featured more than 100 sessions delivered by over 150 speakers from 33 countries. Notably, 45% of the speakers were women, highlighting the EFP’s view that diversity is integral to fostering scientific excellence. The programme offered cutting-edge research presentations, live surgeries, practical workshops and collaborative symposia with major international partners.

At the opening ceremony, Dr Elena Figuero, treasurer of the EuroPerio11 Committee, described the event as “the largest and best-attended congress in the leading discipline of periodontics and implant dentistry”. She added, “This EuroPerio will challenge the boundaries of what can be done in periodontics” and urged participants to “shape the future of periodontics together”.

Since the inaugural EuroPerio, which was took place in Paris in France in 1994 and welcomed 1,200 participants, the congress has grown steadily. Attendance reached a five-digit number for the first time at the ninth EuroPerio, held in Amsterdam in the Netherlands, confirming its role as a cornerstone event in global periodontics.

“EuroPerio11 has surpassed our expectations,” said Prof. Anton Sculean, chair of the EuroPerio11 Committee. “We’ve seen how the global perio community continues to grow in strength, diversity and ambition. The science presented here will influence how we practise, educate and think about periodontal health for years to come.”

He continued: “A particular highlight for me was the session with the World Health Organization, which underscored how periodontal health must gain recognition on the global health agenda. Other personal favourites included the joint symposia between the EFP and the American Academy of Periodontology, the International Academy of Periodontology and the Osteology Foundation.”

EuroPerio11 scientific chair Prof. Lior Shapira added: “The quality of the science has been exceptional. We’ve heard groundbreaking data on the perio–systemic connection, innovations in regenerative techniques and practical insights into sustainability and digitalisation.”

Prof. Shapira added: “One of the most memorable moments for me was the women’s oral health session: the hall was full, and the audience deeply engaged with this important and often under-explored topic. Another standout was the patient’s point of view session, which brought a truly unique perspective to the congress. After three years of dedicated work, it was incredibly rewarding to see it all come together so successfully.”

Outside the lecture halls, EuroPerio11 offered ample opportunities for networking and social interaction. More than 400 people took part in the EuroPerio11 Charity Run, and the congress party at Weitsicht Cobenzl brought together 2,000 guests for a night of celebration against the backdrop of Vienna’s vineyards.

The event’s hybrid format enabled global participation, offering full virtual access to both livestreamed and on-demand content. This commitment to accessibility and digital innovation allowed attendees worldwide to engage with the congress remotely. Delegates can continue to access congress content via the online platform using their personal login credentials.

Held every three years, EuroPerio will convene in May 2028. The next edition is set to take place in Munich in Germany—marking the event’s return to the country for the first time since EuroPerio4 was held in Berlin in 2003.
