MONACO: The European Association for Osseointegration (EAO) will return to Monaco for its 32nd annual scientific meeting, being held from 18 to 20 September at the Grimaldi Forum. This year’s congress, organised in partnership with the French Society of Periodontology and Oral Implantology, will explore the theme “The impact of time in implant dentistry”, addressing how timing influences every aspect of treatment and long-term success.

The first plenary session, titled “Impact of time in implant dentistry”, will bring together three perspectives on the theme. Moderated by Drs Türker Örnekol and Björn Klinge, the session will feature Prof. Ben Moore, Prof. Howard Gluckman and Dr Stephen Chu. Prof. Moore will discuss time from a non-dental perspective, Prof. Gluckman will focus on surgical timing and Dr Chu will examine restorative timing.

In a video message to attendees, Dr Örnekol emphasised the importance of the session, saying: “Time plays a critical role in every phase of implant dentistry. It defines success and/or failure. In this unique session, we will have three great speakers to lead this conversation.”

Looking beyond dentistry

Dr Moore, who is professor of astrophysics at the University of Zurich in Switzerland and author of popular science works, is known for bringing an unconventional perspective to dental audiences. Speaking to Dental Tribune International, he said: “I give popular talks on space, astronomy and the universe. My talks are a break from dentists’ professional schedules, broadening horizons and taking them into another universe, so to speak.”

He added: “As Monty Python used to say: ‘And now for something completely different.’ My talk has no connection to dentistry. It is a break from the normal routine—about as far as you can get from the day-to-day life of a dentist. But time is on all our minds, whether it concerns the lifetime of an implant or the lifetime of our planet.”

Prof. Moore noted that he looks forward to engaging with delegates in Monaco: “I find doctors and dentists are among the most interested audiences for my talks. Afterwards, I often receive the most questions, and I enjoy the evening discussions on topics ranging from time travel to aliens.”

A philosophical walkthrough

Prof. Gluckman, director of the Implant and Aesthetic Academy in Cape Town in South Africa, underlined the significance of the session for the field. “The EAO is one of the most prestigious organisations in implant dentistry worldwide; it is an honour to be invited to be part of the scientific programme,” he told Dental Tribune International.

On his contribution, he explained: “‘Impact of time in implant dentistry’ really is a walk through time in implant surgery. It is a short lecture, so there is no time to cover many specifics, which is why we have kept it as a more philosophical walkthrough. Time has helped us in many aspects of implantology—technology, biological understanding, treatment planning, patient well-being and the availability of research. At the same time, however, our success is dependent on time. Saving teeth is critical.”

He added: “This is an intense lecture—it is more of a philosophical essay on time in implantology.”

Three days of science and exchange

The EAO congress will run for three days, combining interactive presentations, live video sessions and networking opportunities. In addition to the plenary on time, the programme will include the presentation of the first global consensus on clinical guidelines in implant dentistry—a milestone intended to shape future standards.
