3M is currently extending its portfolio of aesthetic orthodontic solutions. The company’s Excellere 2018 congress marked the official launch of the 3M Clarity Ultra Self-Ligating Brackets in Europe and 3M Clarity Aligners, which were recently introduced in the US. Moreover, the company has entered into a partnership with 3Shape to present the Digital Flash-Free Indirect Bonding System, which allows the user to efficiently bond brackets that are precoated with 3M APC Flash-Free Adhesive, eliminating the need for flash removal. At the congress, which was held in Madrid in Spain, orthodontists from across Europe learnt how to successfully make use of these and other innovative products and treatment approaches in their orthodontic offices. In this interview, David Moreno, Scientific Affairs and Education Manager of Orthodontic Business Western Europe at 3M Oral Care, explains why it is extremely important to offer multiple aesthetic orthodontic solutions to patients. In addition, he shares information on further opportunities to learn from experienced users of 3M products.

Mr Moreno, why did 3M decide to put emphasis on the development of aesthetic orthodontic solutions like the new Clarity Ultra Self-Ligating Brackets?
The aesthetic demands of orthodontic patients are increasing. They not only visit the orthodontic office to improve their smile aesthetics in the long run, but also want to look good during treatment. As more and more orthodontists have begun accepting this change, they have started offering aesthetic solutions in order to differentiate their practices and attract a greater number of patients. Analysing the market demand and current situation, however, 3M has detected some potential for improvement of aesthetic appliances. This has led to the development of new products based on market needs and on customer feedback.

What are the main benefits of Clarity Ultra Self-Ligating Brackets?
The new Clarity Ultra Self-Ligating Brackets are highly reliable and versatile—two of the most important characteristics of self-ligating appliances according to market research. Reliability relates to rotational control, which is achieved by a wide ceramic door used to guide rotational movements, to the durable door mechanism, and to bonding and debonding procedures. The bonding procedure is particularly reliable, simple and utterly efficient when the brackets precoated with 3M APC Flash-Free Adhesive are selected. Versatility is ensured, as Clarity Ultra brackets work without ligatures, but can be activated whenever desired using elastomeric or metal ligatures. The oval-shaped area under the tie wing even allows for double ligation. Finally, patient comfort is ensured by smooth bracket surfaces and rounded edges. All these features make the new brackets a perfect complement to our existing portfolio.

What about the indirect bonding system?
Until now, it has been very complicated to implement indirect bonding procedures in the orthodontic practice. The partnership between 3Shape and 3M—two global players with different areas of expertise—changes this. 3Shape offers the required software for easy and accurate virtual bracket positioning, as well as simple designing of the indirect bonding tray. 3M makes its contribution to an efficient bonding procedure with its APC Flash-Free Adhesive technology, which eliminates the need for flash removal. The combination of these technologies enables orthodontists to streamline their bonding procedures by reducing the number of steps required, allowing for simultaneous bonding up to full-arch cases, minimising the risk of bond failures and offering flash-free bonding.

What is 3M planning to do to help orthodontists who are interested in testing the company’s innovative products?
Depending on the orthodontist’s needs, we offer different kinds of training, like in-office lunch and learn events, and seminars with or without hands-on sessions. As a matter of course, the local sales representative may also be contacted for in-depth information whenever desired. On top of that, we have decided to organise Excellere as a series of events. Orthodontists who register for one of these meetings will obtain first-hand information on the successful use of the new products, clinical tips and tricks, and practical advice of how to differentiate their orthodontic offices from internationally renowned experts.

Why did you choose the name “Excellere” for these events?
The name “Excellere” is of Latin origin and means “to elevate, to rise up, to surpass”. This is exactly what orthodontists need to do if they want to become or continue to be successful today in an orthodontic environment in which the only constant is change. With our concept of offering Excellere congresses every year in different cities around the globe, we aim to support our customers in assessing newly available treatment techniques, appliances and digital technologies. Based on the information obtained from experienced speakers, they will be able to select the most appropriate solutions that fit their needs and will know how to implement them successfully. This year, Excellere events were held in San Diego in the US and Madrid, while next year, they will be in London in the UK and Miami in the US. We are already looking forward to welcoming many motivated orthodontists to London on 17 and 18 May 2019.
