VEVEY, Switzerland: Produits Dentaires (PD), a leading Swiss manufacturer specialising in safe and efficient solutions for dental therapy, has launched a completely redesigned website for IrriFlex, its innovative flexible root canal irrigation needle.
LEIPZIG, Germany: For the American legal teams of both Align Technology and 3Shape, 19 October was an exceptionally busy day. While Align dropped a patent infringement case against 3Shape in the US District Court for the District of Delaware, it brought forward an almost identical case in the District Court for the Western District of Texas, alleging that 3Shape had infringed upon seven of its patents. The cases are the latest examples of the two dental companies clashing on the intellectual property front, a fight that seems unlikely to abate any time soon.
ŁÓDŹ, Poland: The organisers of the Central European Dental Exhibition (CEDE) have announced that the on-site event scheduled for 3 to 5 December in Łódź will not take place as planned. The decision was made in the light of the progression of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in Poland. Currently, large Polish cities, including Łódź, are considered high-risk areas for infection with the virus.
Changes in sex hormone levels are associated with the onset and progression of periodontal disease. Dr Ali Çekici, an associate professor at the department of periodontics of the faculty of dentistry at Istanbul University in Turkey, recently held a webinar on the topic, and his lecture generated significant interest from the international dental community, particularly in relation to periodontal problems experienced during pregnancy. In a conversation with Dental Tribune International, Dr Çekici addressed the importance of taking sex hormones into account when planning and providing periodontal care.
BIRMINGHAM, UK: Across the UK, local lockdowns are proliferating as SARS-CoV-2 case numbers continue to increase. Though the initial nationwide lockdown ended back in June, data continues to to be gathered that shows just how widely SARS-CoV-2 spread during this time. A study conducted by University of Birmingham researchers has now found that a staggering 15% of dental professionals possessed SARS-CoV-2 antibodies by the time the lockdown had ended.
AHIHUD, Israel: This year, MIS Implants Technologies is celebrating its 25th anniversary. During these two and a half decades, the company has taken on countless challenges, explored many developments and celebrated numerous breakthroughs. Today, MIS is an established global business and one of the major competitors on the dental implant market.
CHICAGO, U.S.: Since SARS-CoV-2 is an airborne virus and very easily spreads through aerosols, dentists were believed to be at a high infection risk at the beginning of the pandemic. However, according to an American Dental Association Science & Research Institute (ADASRI) and Health Policy Institute (HPI) study, fewer than 1% of dentists nationwide were estimated to be COVID-19 positive as of June.
Getting patients to brush interdentally can be an arduous task, but the BOB-App does exactly that. BOB stands for “bleeding on brushing”, which is the motivation app’s crucial parameter. The BOB-Score tells patients their overall inflammation level, and a mouth map shows them exactly which size of interdental brush to use at home for each interdental space. As a result, patients are motivated to reduce their inflammation scores before the next follow-up. Argentine dentist and periodontist Dr Matias Fontanetto uses the BOB-App in order to motivate his patients to turn interdental brushing into a daily habit.
Users of dental zirconia are really spoilt for choice these days. Countless manufacturers offer zirconia materials that differ in their mechanical and optical properties and indication range. What is not apparent at first sight is that the available products also differ with respect to the quality of the CAD/CAM blanks offered. Blank quality is highly dependent on the quality of the raw materials and is affected by different aspects during raw material processing, pressing and pre-sintering. This has a huge impact on the surface quality, edge stability, fit and processing requirements of milled restorations.
HÜNENBERG, Switzerland: TRI Dental Implants recently announced that it has obtained CE mark certification, enabling it to market its digital implant, matrix, in Europe. Matrix is the first approved dental implant specifically developed for digital manufacturing technologies such as CAD/CAM or 3D printing. By means of this new concept, prostheses can be directly planned on the implant without the use of an abutment.
LEIPZIG, Germany: Vitamin D, also referred to as the sunshine vitamin, is increasingly more difficult to obtain from sun exposure. The increase in the number of people working in offices today has drastically reduced access to direct sunlight. The strict confinement measures worldwide to slow down the spread of SARS-CoV-2 can only have worsened this situation. Vitamin D deficiency has been found to be associated with dental implant failure and complications, and mounting evidence is suggesting that inadequate vitamin D levels in the blood could play a major role in SARS-CoV-2 susceptibility and outcomes.
COPENHAGEN, Denmark: Whereas it was previously impossible to imagine a dental laboratory adopting a fully digital workflow, digital dentistry has already redefined the previously established dental procedures and empowered dental professionals and clinicians to take the leap and immerse themselves in a digital future. The benefits of dental technology can be clearly seen in the introduction of digital dentures—not only has this facilitated denturists’ and dental clinicians’ work by offering more flexibility and efficiency, but it has also improved the patient experience and enabled patients to become more involved in their own care.
CHARLOTTE, N.C., U.S./BENSHEIM, Germany: After a series of groundbreaking product and solution launches, Dentsply Sirona’s sights are now set on creating the best possible workflow solutions for implant dentistry professionals. The idea is to identify customer-unique solutions that enable high-quality treatment while saving time and effort. As the recent launches of Azento, Astra Tech Implant EV and Acuris have shown, the company intends to remain an innovative leader in implant dentistry.
A periodontist once told me that a good dental hygienist leaves behind around 15% of calculus after initial therapy. As a dental hygiene student, I failed to appreciate what these words implied. Now, 13 years later and amid task relocation in Dutch dentistry, I often think back to those words. Whether the percentage of calculus that is not removed is actually 15% I am not going to debate in this article, as it is not very relevant in this context. It is simply accepted that a dental hygienist does not remove all calculus during initial therapy.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska, U.S.: Videos of an Alaskan dentist treating a patient while riding a hoverboard went viral during an investigation of his practice last year. He has now been convicted on 46 separate felony and misdemeanor counts. As a result, he has been sentenced to serve 20 years in jail with eight years suspended, according to a statement by Alaska’s Department of Law.
LONDON, UK: A review of the evidence relating to the use of aerosol-generating procedures (AGPs) and the risk that they pose for the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in dental settings has resulted in a further reduction to the fallow time that is recommended by UK dental authorities. Dental professionals can now calculate the time necessary between dental procedures using a free online tool.
From 1 October 2020, Swedish company Orsing has discontinued its white Hygoformic, which was manufactured in polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP), and replaced it with natural green Hygoformic Bio, manufactured in Green PE and packaged in home compostable and biodegradable bioplastic. In an interview with Dental Tribune International, Patrizia Mattiucci, clinical relations manager at Orsing’s parent company DirectaDentalGroup, spoke about the reasoning behind this change, the production challenges that were faced and where the materials come from. She also gave us some insight into how the company wants to help dental clinics to communicate their environmental choices to their patients.

In aesthetically critical areas, the selection of the time of implant placement—immediate, early or late—can influence the outcome. In an upcoming webinar on 19 October, Dr Stephen Chen will describe current concepts in post-extraction healing. Prior to his online presentation, Chen, who is president of the International Team for Implantology, gave a brief preview of his topic.
