LEIPZIG, Germany: For the American legal teams of both Align Technology and 3Shape, 19 October was an exceptionally busy day. While Align dropped a patent infringement case against 3Shape in the US District Court for the District of Delaware, it brought forward an almost identical case in the District Court for the Western District of Texas, alleging that 3Shape had infringed upon seven of its patents. The cases are the latest examples of the two dental companies clashing on the intellectual property front, a fight that seems unlikely to abate any time soon.

Interview: “Thanks to this app, patients take ownership of their bodies”

October 20, 2020 | Americas | Interviews | News

Getting patients to brush interdentally can be an arduous task, but the BOB-App does exactly that. BOB stands for “bleeding on brushing”, which is the motivation app’s crucial parameter. The BOB-Score tells patients their overall inflammation level, and a mouth map shows them exactly which size of interdental brush to use at home for each interdental space. As a result, patients are motivated to reduce their inflammation scores before the next follow-up. Argentine dentist and periodontist Dr Matias Fontanetto uses the BOB-App in order to motivate his patients to turn interdental brushing into a daily habit.

KATANA Zirconia: The science behind superior product properties

October 20, 2020 | Americas | Advertorial

Users of dental zirconia are really spoilt for choice these days. Countless manufacturers offer zirconia materials that differ in their mechanical and optical properties and indication range. What is not apparent at first sight is that the available products also differ with respect to the quality of the CAD/CAM blanks offered. Blank quality is highly dependent on the quality of the raw materials and is affected by different aspects during raw material processing, pressing and pre-sintering. This has a huge impact on the surface quality, edge stability, fit and processing requirements of milled restorations.

Sunshine vitamin D and COVID-19: Is there a correlation?

October 19, 2020 | Europe | News

LEIPZIG, Germany: Vitamin D, also referred to as the sunshine vitamin, is increasingly more difficult to obtain from sun exposure. The increase in the number of people working in offices today has drastically reduced access to direct sunlight. The strict confinement measures worldwide to slow down the spread of SARS-CoV-2 can only have worsened this situation. Vitamin D deficiency has been found to be associated with dental implant failure and complications, and mounting evidence is suggesting that inadequate vitamin D levels in the blood could play a major role in SARS-CoV-2 susceptibility and outcomes.

A hybrid dental hygienist

October 15, 2020 | Europe | News

A periodontist once told me that a good dental hygienist leaves behind around 15% of calculus after initial therapy. As a dental hygiene student, I failed to appreciate what these words implied. Now, 13 years later and amid task relocation in Dutch dentistry, I often think back to those words. Whether the percentage of calculus that is not removed is actually 15% I am not going to debate in this article, as it is not very relevant in this context. It is simply accepted that a dental hygienist does not remove all calculus during initial therapy.
