BARCELONA, Spain: Marking today’s World Oral Health Day, Dentaid has released a guide offering practical recommendations to help older adults integrate oral health care into their daily routines. The publication responds to the growing global ageing population and underlines the importance of maintaining oral health as part of healthy ageing.

According to the United Nations’ World Population Prospects 2024: Summary of Results, the number of people aged 80 and older is expected to reach 265 million by the mid-2030s, exceeding the number of infants under the age of 1. By the late 2070s, the global population aged 65 and over is projected to reach 2.2 billion, surpassing the number of people younger than 18. Against this backdrop, Dentaid’s new Oral Health for a Better Life: 10 Keys to Oral Health Later in Life guide draws attention to the role of oral health in healthy ageing, particularly in relation to nutrition, speech, social interaction and overall well-being.

“As people live increasingly longer lives, oral health can no longer be considered secondary. Taking care of our mouths is an essential part of well-being and quality of life. With this ten-point guide, we aim to provide simple, practical recommendations for everyday life,” explained Dr Marta Larrea, dentist and global medical lead at Dentaid.

According to Dentaid, the guide is presented in a clear and easy-to-read format and reflects a European clinical perspective. It is also aligned with the Oral Health Throughout Life campaign launched by the European Federation of Periodontology and Dentaid in March last year. The guide can be accessed here.
