For over two decades, 3Shape has set the benchmark for digital dentistry with its innovative technology and award-winning Scandinavian design. From humble beginnings as a small startup to a market leader, the company continues to break barriers. In this interview, 3Shape’s Chief Technology Officer Niclas Blohm talks about his company’s new product releases at IDS 2025, solutions that he says will revolutionise what he believes is the core of dentistry: the patient–dentist relationship.

Mr Blohm, 3Shape has a reputation for surprising everyone at IDS. What is planned for this year’s event?
As impactful as our launch of the world’s first wireless intra-oral scanner was back in 2017, this year is going to be even bigger. We are redefining the patient experience with the introduction of our new 3Shape TRIOS 6 intra-oral scanner, Dx Plus software and the new mobile app developed exclusively for patients, DentalHealth.

The brand-new TRIOS 6 will introduce an abundance of innovative technology and, through our Dx Plus software, diagnostics. We believe that TRIOS 6 will not only make workflows more efficient and predictable but also precipitate a paradigm shift in the patient–dentist relationship.

We have developed an entirely new way for dentists to explain and drive treatment acceptance. We are inviting the patient into the treatment discussion. As a result, I believe that dentistry will undergo a remarkable shift.

Can you tell readers more about TRIOS 6 and Dx Plus?
Dx Plus is our new diagnostic software, compatible exclusively with TRIOS 6 intra-oral scanners. The software, enabled by TRIOS 6, uses AI to help detect plaque, tooth wear, surface caries and gingival recession. By the end of the year, we will also add proximal caries to the pathologies able to be detected. Moreover, TRIOS 6 introduces our new hyperspectral technology, which captures tooth and gingiva geometry and shade, diagnostics with the Dx Plus software, and high-definition imaging on every scan.

In essence, dentists are now provided with a scanner and software that redefine the role of an intra-oral scanner. Here is a scanner and software that could radically change the yearly patient exam routine and maybe even who conducts the patient exams at your dental practice.

Also, importantly, to complement the release of our most exciting scanner to date, we are introducing the DentalHealth app exclusively for patients. The mobile app will enable patients to take home their intra-oral scans and their diagnostic results. It will also include personalised advice and engaging content to encourage patients to take better care of their dental health.

TRIOS 6 and Dx Plus, together with the DentalHealth app, will synergistically redefine the patient–dentist relationship and empower patients to take ownership of their dental health. We believe that this potent combination stands to significantly improve patient acceptance rates and care, build trust and unlock exceptional patient experiences.

Dentistry is changing, but at its core, it is about the patient–dentist relationship. The new solutions we’re introducing this week at IDS will help dental professionals affirm that bond and their practice. These products are the future of dentistry: predictable, faster and social. We invite all IDS attendees to come by our booth and try them out.
