CHARLOTTE, N.C., US: Dentsply Sirona has launched Smart View – Detect, a diagnostic aid that employs artificial intelligence (AI) to detect periapical radiolucencies in CBCT scans. It is the first such software to receive US Food and Drug Administration clearance and has obtained CE marking for the EU market too.
CBCT imaging is widely recognised for its diagnostic value; however, reviewing the depth of information contained in full 3D volumes can feel intimidating in everyday practice. Smart View – Detect is designed to help clinicians review CBCT scans more efficiently and clearly by visually highlighting specific areas within CBCT scans where periapical radiolucencies may be present.
In an internal multi-reader, multi-case clinical study, clinicians using Smart View – Detect identified more teeth with periapical radiolucencies than during unaided CBCT review. The improvement corresponded to an approximately 46% relative increase in tooth-level detection sensitivity, and there was no meaningful increase in teeth incorrectly flagged as affected.
Available through DS Core, Smart View - Detect for detecting periapical radiolucencies is compatible with both newly installed and existing Dentsply Sirona CBCT systems.
Clearer patient communication and cloud-based digital dentistry
By directly visualising areas of interest, Smart View - Detect also enhances communication with patients and supports informed, confident and productive treatment discussions. Although the feature does not provide a diagnosis, its visual presentation can help strengthen understanding, engagement and trust during consultations.
Smart View - Detect is available through DS Core, allowing AI-supported insights to be accessed directly via the cloud-based platform’s imaging workflow. Commenting on this new capability, Dr Wolf-Dieter Perlitz, senior director of DS Core at Dentsply Sirona, said: “By bringing a first-of-its-kind AI-based diagnosis support into DS Core, we continue to advance the value of connected dentistry, helping clinicians feel confident in their evaluations, work more efficiently and communicate more clearly with patients.”
By continuously developing DS Core, Dentsply Sirona is working to reduce the operational and clinical complexity associated with digital dentistry. This includes expanding its capabilities and applying clinical insights from daily practice to support more efficient workflows and inform clinical decision-making.
Availability, integration and system compatibility
Smart View - Detect is now available in the US and Europe and requires a DS Core Standard or DS Core Advanced subscription. It is available for both newly installed and existing compatible Dentsply Sirona CBCT systems, including Orthophos S, Orthophos SL and Axeos. Customers with a DS Core account can make use of the feature as an added capability within their existing set-ups and do not need to purchase new imaging equipment. The feature supports all fields of view from 5 × 5 cm to 17 × 11 cm and works with both newly acquired and historical CBCT scans transferred from Sidexis 4 to DS Core.
