Dr Yo-Han Choi is a dentist and co-owner of Canada Bay Dental in Sydney in Australia. In this interview with Dental Tribune International, he shares his insights on embracing cutting-edge technology to elevate patient care. Dr Choi’s new ten-chair, state-of-the-art practice is set to open soon, and he discusses how integrating tools such as Primescan 2 has transformed his practice’s workflow, improved the patient experience and enhanced the overall quality of care. He also discusses the impact that these advancements have had on his practice philosophy and practice growth.
Dr Choi, can you tell us about your experience with Primescan 2? How has it improved your practice’s workflow and patient care?
Primescan 2 is a fantastic piece of technology that we’ve recently integrated into the clinical workflow at our practice. I was initially sceptical about the ability of a new scanner to improve our clinical workflow, especially since we already use four other scanners daily. However, I have been delighted with the quality of the scans and the ease of use of the technology.
As a practice committed to prevention and the maintenance of optimal oral health, we actively adopt technologies that help us deliver better healthcare outcomes for our patients. A key component in achieving this is ensuring that the relevant digital data is regularly collected and used effectively.
The new Primescan 2 has made some of our other scanners redundant. The main reason for this is that it can be used across multiple rooms without the need to move dongles, laptops or any heavy hardware. This has effectively removed several barriers to patient scanning and increased the use of the intra-oral scanner in cases where impressions wouldn’t typically be needed. I anticipate that this will enable us to deliver better overall patient care.
What motivated you to transition into digital dentistry, and has DS Core supported that decision?
We have been a fully integrated digital practice for several years and have access to CBCT, digital intra-oral radiography, intra-oral scanning, in-house milling, facial scanning, photogrammetry and 3D printing. When investing in new technology, we need to be confident that it will deliver a substantial improvement in performance or workflow compared with our existing systems.
Many dental scanners now offer high-fidelity scans for various applications, but choosing the right one requires evaluating how well it integrates into a streamlined ecosystem and supports efficient data use. This includes assessing its user friendliness for staff and its ability to enhance diagnosis, communication and treatment planning. DS Core aligns perfectly with these goals, and I am thrilled that Dentsply Sirona shares our commitment to advancing patient care through effective technology use.
“ When investing in new technology, we need to be confident that it will deliver a substantial improvement in performance or workflow.”
As someone who works with both CEREC products and Primescan 2, could you explain how these technologies integrate into your existing workflows and describe the benefits you have seen from this combination?
The existing CEREC workflow has been optimised over many years and deserves its place as the market leader in chairside scanning and milling. Primescan 2 not only fits seamlessly into this workflow but also improves it, as scans can be taken on any internet-connected device with a screen. Additionally, restoration design and milling can be performed on either an existing CEREC station or a dedicated design station, facilitating more efficient and effective treatment delivery.
With your new ten-chair practice opening soon, how do you envision Primescan 2 and technologies like Axano Pure and Axeos supporting patient expectations and business growth?
Our practice philosophy is based on our provision of the comprehensive care that patients deserve. The ecosystem developed by Dentsply Sirona allows us to seamlessly integrate technologies such as Primescan 2, Primemill, Primeprint, Axeos and Axano Pure, and this gives us confidence in delivering excellent and comprehensive care for our patients. These technologies enhance patients’ understanding of their oral health and treatments, and the streamlined ecosystem enables consistent, efficient communication across our dental team, making the patient experience scalable and setting us apart from practices that have yet to modernise.
