This September in Shanghai, the 2025 FDI World Dental Congress (FDIWDC25) will welcome thousands of oral health professionals from around the world. Alongside its dynamic keynote lectures and scientific sessions, this year’s programme features four dedicated interactive clinical symposia, each focused on a key domain of clinical dentistry: aesthetic dental restorations, vital pulp therapy, periodontal healthcare and implant restorations. Structured as a 2-hour expert panel, each symposium aims not only to present cutting-edge research and techniques but also to foster cross-disciplinary dialogue, practical knowledge exchange and peer-to-peer learning—all with the goal of elevating patient care worldwide. In this interview, FDI speaks with Dr Uğur Ergin, returning speaker and long-time FDI contributor, about his past experiences, what excites him about this year’s programme and the value of interactive symposia in shaping the future of clinical practice.
Dr Ergin, you’ve participated in previous FDI congresses. What brings you back this year?
I had the honour of speaking at the FDIWDC in Argentina in 2018, which was a truly inspiring and enriching experience. I have also had the chance to be involved in two FDI congresses in Istanbul, first in 2013 as part of the local organising committee and then in 2024 as director of the exhibition and sponsorship committee. Both experiences showed me how much hard work goes into creating such a big event and how FDI truly leads the way in bridging science and industry. That’s why I’m really looking forward to Shanghai this year. It’s always exciting to be part of something that moves our profession forward and brings people together from all over the world.
What are you most looking forward to in this year’s scientific programme?
This year’s programme reflects the evolving landscape of dentistry and brings together valuable global perspectives. I’m especially excited about the sessions on digital dentistry, sustainability, healthy ageing and global sugar reduction strategies. They show how FDI combines clinical science with real-world impact, including public health and environmentally responsible practice.
Shanghai is expected to host one of the biggest FDI congresses to date. What are your expectations? Any advice for attendees?
I expect FDIWDC25 in Shanghai to be a milestone event for the global dental community. FDI plays a vital role in continuing professional development by offering a platform where science, clinical expertise, education and industry come together. The congress is not only a meeting point; it serves as a compass for the future of dentistry.
This year, I’m especially looking forward to the way the scientific programme and the industry exhibition will highlight cutting-edge innovations. It’s a rare opportunity to experience both academic excellence and practical advancements under one roof.
You’re one of the speakers at the symposium on implant restorations. Why do you believe this interactive format is important?
Collaborative sessions such as this one are incredibly valuable because they highlight the diversity of approaches and experiences across regions. By sharing clinical workflows, digital tools and real-world challenges, we can all learn from each other and refine our practices. I look forward to a rich discussion with my colleagues, and I hope the audience gains practical insights that they can apply directly to their implant treatments.
Editorial note:
Dr Uğur Ergin will be one of the speakers in a symposium on implant restorations, which will be held on 12 September, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the FDIWDC25. The symposium will take place in Hall 4.2, Room D2 of the National Exhibition and Convention Center in Shanghai. More information about the event can be found here.
