LEIPZIG, Germany: This is the first part in the Dental Tribune International (DTI) crowdfunding series, which will showcase the latest and greatest ideas in dental care, looking at what and who might be leading the next dental revolution. Technology is often a source of innovation, and ways in which to improve oral care at home is a major focus. With many dental issues being preventable, smart brushing is something in particular that innovators want to promote.
ToothShower is one of those inventions, and since launching its crowdfunding campaign in late 2017, it has been a success story. The original goal of $25,000 was reached after 28 hours and the product went on to raise a total of $181,836 by the end of the year.
According to the company, ToothShower aims to help users take care of their teeth much more accurately and thoroughly, using water from the shower to clean 100 percent of tooth surfaces, compared with 60 percent with average brushing. Offering three kinds of cleaning in a single solution, it comes with a toothbrush, an irrigating tip and a gingiva massager, with a base that attaches to the shower wall.
As stated by ToothShower, the dual-headed toothbrush cleans both the front and back and sides of teeth. The irrigating tip flushes water between teeth like a water flosser, but without the mess to clean up, and the gingiva massager produces seven jets of water to stimulate blood flow in the gingivae, which is a large part of preventing and even healing periodontal disease.
ToothShower creator Lisa Guenst, a dental hygienist with more than 25 years’ experience, explained: “I knew there had to be a better, more effective method of care that also eliminated some of the hassle of using water flossers and other methods. ToothShower is not only extremely effective at cleaning teeth and gums, it’s right in the shower so there’s no mess, no batteries and no refilling. Users can even add in mouthwash or tooth whitener for an even fresher feeling.”
Guenst told DTI, “We raised the initial $181,836 on Kickstarter. That total was then moved over to Indiegogo and we continue to take pre-orders—so our amount raised is still growing. Our Kickstarter funding enabled us to move into our tooling and manufacturing stage to be able to deliver the product to our backers by May 2018. ToothShower will be made available to the public in June of 2018.”
