ATHENS, Greece: To increase the educational opportunities for paediatric dentists, the European Academy of Paediatric Dentistry (EAPD) has launched its own online campus in cooperation with Dental Tribune International (DTI) and sponsored by Procter & Gamble. In the coming year, the academy will present six webinars which offer continuing education credits for attendees and feature international speakers.

EAPD believes that now is the perfect time to start a campus, as SARS-CoV-2 has increased the need for distance learning. The academyemphasises that the field is unique in that paediatric dentistry engages with a wide range of topics relevant to many dental specialties, including oral healthcare from pregnancy through infancy and childhood to adolescence, and restorative and preventive dentistry, as well as the management of these groups of patients.

“Therefore, the academy has launched the , following the evolution of technology and recognising the needs of paediatric dentists for education and professional development on current topics,” said Dr Sotiria Gizani, general secretary of the EAPD and project co-ordinator. “The EAPD, in collaboration with DTI and sponsored by Procter & Gamble, is very pleased to be able to offer webinars as an educational tool for EAPD members and other dental professionals who work with children,” she said.

First webinar will be broadcast in less than two weeks

Prof. Norbert Krämer (Germany) will inaugurate the new EAPD campus with the first webinar on 18 November. “He is a very dedicated and prominent lecturer in the field of paediatric dentistry with a long history of continuous support as the chair of the Future Congresses and Seminars Committee and a past president of the EAPD. Therefore, we are honoured to have him as our first speaker,” explained Gizani. Krämer will hold a presentation on the management of early childhood caries under the current COVID-19 conditions, starting at 7 p.m. CET. According to him, early childhood caries is still prevalent, resulting in a great need for treatment. In his online lecture, he will focus on the prerequisites for minimally invasive therapy of primary dentition and treatment concepts for the posterior and anterior, including filling materials and their limits—when to use fillings and when to use crowns.

Prebiotics and probiotics are increasingly being included in the prevention and comprehensive management of caries in children. Prof. Emeritus Svante Twetman (Denmark) will speak about how a healthy microbiome may be supported by prebiotics and probiotics, on 16 December. In his webinar, which will be broadcast at 7 p.m. CET, Twetman will discuss studies which have shown that certain proteins can boost fluoride and impede the carious process by promoting the growth and action of beneficial bacteria. He is an expert and distinguished lecturer in the fields of cariology and prevention and he has received several international awards such as the International Association for Dental Research Distinguished Scientist Award.

More webinars are expected to be presented from January onwards, featuring speakers from several countries.

“We hope that the Galileo project will strengthen the relationship of the EAPD with its members during the present challenging times and help dentists become more familiar with the scientific activities of the academy,” summarised Gizani.

All webinars will be held in English. While the live webinars will be available for all dental professionals, the on-demand webinars will only be accessible to EAPD members. More information and free-of-charge registration are available on the EAPD campus.
