DUNEDIN, New Zealand: Officially opened on 11 June, the new Clinical Services Building at the University of Otago’s Faculty of Dentistry is set to replace the Walsh Building as the primary care unit and teaching clinic. Recently, Education Minister Chris Hipkins took a tour of the new facility to get a better idea of some of the work being done and to see first-hand some new and exciting advancements the clinic will provide.

After a meeting with university representatives, Hipkins received in-depth explanations about new aspects of the building and its equipment, as well as the vast improvements in research, treatment and teaching that investments have allowed.

“Having Mr Hipkins here was an honour. We’re proud of the Clinical Services Building that combines a modern and fully functional dental hospital with state-of-the-art teaching facilities; it’s a great space to work, teach and research in, and it was good to be able to communicate that to the minister,” said acting Vice Chancellor Prof. Richard Blaikie.

“The new dental school is very impressive. It is cutting-edge technology and a great space for dental training and dental services, and just a couple of steps away from the dental researchers. Kiwis’ teeth are in good hands,” said Hipkins.

Speaking to Dental Tribune International about the clinic and its improvements, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry Prof. Karl Lyons said, “The new building has only been open a few weeks and it has already made life easier for staff, students and patients. We can do more—more effectively and more efficiently. This building is superbly equipped; it really is world-class, and we’re all noticing the positive outcomes that is bringing.”
