STOCKHOLM, Sweden: The advent of digital solutions is changing not only restorative processes but also many of dentistry’s specialties, like orthodontics. A new initiative for helping professionals become involved in this growing field was launched on Monday at the European Orthodontic Society (EOS) congress in Stockholm. Global Leaders in Oral Healthcare (GLOH) will offer training and certification in the GLOH method, initially in Sweden and other European markets.

According to Dr Anna Hajati, a leading Swedish specialist in digital orthodontics, the principle behind the new concept lies in the combination of state-of-the-art digital tools and processes, such as intra-oral scanning and 3-D imaging, to shorten treatment time and increase accuracy. The use of digital technology is further intended to allow patients to play a more active part in the improvement of their smiles. With GLOH, a process originally developed and introduced by Ortodonti Akademin in Sweden, they will have much more influence over the final outcome or the alignment system to be used, among other aspects of the treatment, she said.

In order to become GLOH-certified providers, specialists will have to undergo extensive training in the GLOH method and SureSmile simulation for tooth movement planning online and at the company’s headquarters in Stockholm.

Once qualified, they will become GLOH licence holders and form part of a growing network of clinics around the world.

For dental professionals who do not wish to pursue certification in the GLOH method immediately, the company said it will also offer a number of e-services that will provide access to GLOH’s various resources remotely from their own clinic, based on their requirements.

Prior to launch, initial partnerships with clinics in Copenhagen in Denmark and Athens in Greece to become GLOH-certified providers have already been finalised, a company official told Dental Tribune Online yesterday in Stockholm. The company further intends to extend its reach into markets in Europe, as well as the US and Middle East, in the near future.

Leading industry competitors, including Planmeca, 3Shape, Orametrix, Kelisec and tops Software, a US-based provider of practice management solutions, are supporting the project.

GLOH is currently providing information about the initiative at Booth A01:20 at the EOS conference in Stockholm, where Hajati is also available for questions.
