International Endodontic Journal appoints new associate editor

HOBOKEN, N.J., U.S.: Because the International Endodontic Journal (IEJ) has had a tremendous increase in submissions of systematic reviews and meta‐analyses in recent years, it was decided to bring onboard a new associate editor to assume responsibility for this type of manuscript. Malaysian researcher Dr. Venkateshbabu Nagendrababu was appointed to the position this month.

In an editorial, IEJ Editor-in-Chief Prof. Paul Dummer announced the new role and introduced Nagendrababu. He is a senior lecturer in the Division of Clinical Dentistry and head of the Dental Skills Centre at the School of Dentistry of the International Medical University in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia.

In an interview with Dental Tribune International, Nagendrababu said that he considers his appointment to the position a great honor and privilege. “The IEJ is the leading journal (based on its impact factor, 3.801) in the field of endodontics and follows a robust, supportive and unbiased peer review process. The quality of the journal is maintained by the fantastic, hardworking team members—the editorial board, reviewers, authors and publisher, Wiley. The papers published in the IEJ play a key role in disseminating research findings and enhancing day-to-day clinical practice for the benefit of general dentists, specialists and scientists, as well as undergraduate and postgraduate students across the globe,” he said.

Nagendrababu’s main role will be ensuring that the manuscripts accepted by the journal are of the highest quality for the benefit of readers and the specialty in general. He added: “I will do that by supporting authors in improving their submissions by providing them with helpful feedback. As a bonus, I am sure the position will make me a better researcher.”

The IEJ has already received 46 systematic reviews and meta‐analyses in 2020, compared with 75 in 2019, 36 in 2017, 33 in 2015 and 11 in 2013. Nagendrababu explained this trend: “Systematic reviews and meta‐analyses produce unbiased and transparent evidence for clinicians, policymakers and patients and are positioned at the top level in the hierarchy of evidence. In essence, they answer research questions by summarizing all the available empirical evidence. The specialty of endodontics deals with a wide range of new concepts and innovative clinical techniques and materials—some of which are controversial; as a result, systematic reviews are becoming popular, as they are able to find the truth about their efficacy.”
