TOKYO, Japan: The Japanese government has recently honoured Makoto Nakao, the former president of GC Corporation and present chairman of the board of GC International, for his distinguished accomplishments in the Japanese pharmaceutical industry. Nakao received his award, the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette, at a conferment ceremony on Friday, 13 December, and was subsequently invited to the Imperial Palace for an audience with the emperor.

Almost 100 years ago, three young chemists from Japan, one of whom was Kiyoshi Nakao, founded what would one day become GC Corporation, a leading manufacturer of dental products. Kiyoshi Nakao succeeded in keeping the company in family hands and his son, Makoto Nakao, and his grandson have served in GC’s top leadership.

In recent decades, Makoto Nakao has made a significant contribution to the company’s sustainable growth and continued success by creating a high-performance environment based on a blend of Japanese and European culture. While he was president of GC, the company experienced exponential growth. Factories and offices were opened all over the world and new products and training concepts were developed.

Nakao’s overarching aim was to improve global oral health. Just recently, GC Europe was recognized by the European Foundation for Quality Management and became the first dental company to win its Global Excellence Award.
