FRANKFURT, Germany: Gender Dentistry International (GDI), the scientific society for sex and gender issues in dentistry, is calling for submissions and nominations for its biennial scientific awards, being presented for the second time. Aimed at promoting knowledge of sex- and gender-specific aspects in oral medicine, the awards are presented to novice authors of scientific publications, as well as senior researchers and lecturers.
The Nolting Award for Studies in Gender Dentistry is endowed with €2,000 and is granted to young dentists who have produced outstanding scientific papers, or doctoral or master’s research. The GDI Award for Excellence in Gender Dentistry recognises university lecturers and senior scientists for their commitment to research and teaching.
“Although epidemiological data supports the existence of sex and gender differences in oral diseases, those differences are not yet integrated in recommended actions, for instance in medical guidelines,” responded GDI President Dr Christiane Gleissner when asked about the relevance of sex and gender in dentistry. “A differentiating approach opens up new perspectives in all fields of dentistry. Furthermore, the indisputably interdisciplinary nature of this issue reinforces the anchoring of dentistry in medicine,” she added.
“We support studies on gender-specific knowledge in dentistry, but we also demand them! We’d like to honour and thank all those who are working in this field of research. Raising awareness of the impact of sex and gender on oral disease is what the awards represent,” concluded Gleissner.
Submissions for consideration close on 31 August. The award ceremony will be held during Deutscher Zahnärztetag [German dentists’ day] in Frankfurt on 9 November. Detailed information regarding submissions can be found here.
