ALEXANDRIA, Va., U.S.: 2019 marks the centennial of the Journal of Dental Research (JDR). Over the last century, the journal has been dedicated to the dissemination of new knowledge and information on all sciences relevant to dentistry, the oral cavity and associated structures in health and disease. To celebrate, the journal will be featuring a year-long commemorative article and podcast series that highlights topics that have transformed dental, oral and craniofacial research over the past 100 years.

In the February 2019 issue, Prof. Colin Dawes, Professor Emeritus of Oral Biology at the University of Manitoba, Canada and Dr. David Wong, a professor and associate dean for research at the University of California, Los Angeles School of Dentistry published an article, titled “Role of saliva and salivary diagnostics in the advancement of oral health,” which focused on past developments related to saliva and outlined many of the biomarkers identified therein.

“In the past decade, salivaomics studies have revealed the translation and clinical utilities of saliva for biomarker development,” Wong said. “Further investigation is still needed, but this emerging area of research has great potential,” he continued.

“Key future tasks will be validating salivary exosome biomarkers and determining the molecular mechanisms of exosome interaction between distal tumors and salivary glands,” Dawes added.

The second Journal of Dental Research centennial podcast, titled “Featured podcast: Role of saliva and salivary diagnostics in the advancement of oral Health,” will feature a conversation between Dawes and Wong, moderated by Dr. Nicholas Jakubovics—an associate editor of the journal. Along with the article and podcast series, the legacy of the journal will be honored during a celebration at the 97th General Session of the International Association of Dental Research, which will be held in conjunction with the 48th Annual Meeting of the American Association of Dental Research and the 43rdAnnual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research in Vancouver, Canada on June 19‒22.
