Many are calling it the post-pandemic era—the time in which we will simply have to live with the SARS-CoV-2 virus as part of our daily personal and professional lives. For dentists and their teams, a key aspect of this will be the adoption of a set of new hygiene protocols that will help to reduce infections and make dental settings safer. On Tuesday, 23 June, Prof. Lorenzo Breschi of the University of Bologna in Italy will host a free webinar that will focus on the incorporation of these new hygiene protocols into clinical practice and guiding patients on the importance of their home dental care regimes.
The need for new hygiene protocols will be evident to all dentists and dental teams as they resume normal business activities. Breschi’s webinar will give attendees a brief overview of how to resume dental practice with state-of-the-art hygiene protocols so that they can provide oral care in the safest and most consistent way.
Speaking on the rationale for his webinar to Dental Tribune International, Breschi said: “Every time there is an important change, we need to adapt and cope conscientiously. At the moment, it is difficult to understand whether this will be a permanent situation, so it is necessary to stay informed and to act according to the latest guidelines.”
Breschi admits that it will not be an easy transition. “Now, more than ever, as dentists, we must pay attention to all of the hygiene protocols and meet them in the most scrupulous way. Adapting to these hygiene protocols won’t be easily achieved for dental teams at first, but we must put in all of the required effort, not only for the good of our patients but also for the health of the entire community,” he emphasised.
“This is a period in which oral health prevention is of fundamental importance”
While dentists and their teams need to adapt, so do patients, according to Breschi. Advising them on at-home hygiene protocols, such as the use of antibacterial mouthwash, will help to make the practice of dentistry safer. “This is a period in which oral health prevention is of fundamental importance. Improving patients’ oral hygiene will reduce the need for the long and complex dental procedures that might increase the risk of cross-contamination. For this reason, I believe that implementing the standard oral hygiene routine, with mouthrinses, could be an effective home care procedure to enhance oral health,” he explained.
Breschi is professor and chair of restorative dentistry, and director of the master’s programme in aesthetic restorative dentistry at the University of Bologna, and owns and runs a private dental practice in Bologna. He has served as president of a number of associations, including the International Academy for Adhesive Dentistry and the European Federation of Conservative Dentistry, and is an associate editor of the Journal of Adhesive Dentistry.
Registration for the webinar, titled “The importance of hygiene protocols in clinical practice in the post pandemic era”, is now open. The webinar will be presented live on Tuesday, 23 June, at 9 a.m. BST, and participants will have the opportunity to ask questions about the topic, as well as earn a continuing education credit by answering a questionnaire after the lecture. Registration on the Dental Tribune Study Club website is free of charge.
