TOKYO, Japan: In modern dental practice, there is a great need for materials that combine convenient handling and procedural efficiency with aesthetic, durable results. In direct restorative treatments, the resin composite used has a significant impact on procedural quality, and many clinicians therefore opt for a universal paste composite such as CLEARFIL MAJESTY ES-2Universal. Kuraray Noritake Dental has now introduced CLEARFIL MAJESTY ES Flow Universal, a new flowable composite that offers similar benefits.

The new solution comes in two complementary shades designed for intuitive shade matching across a range of restorative procedures. It combines practical flow characteristics with advanced shade-blending ability and optimal mechanical properties.

A light-polymerised, radiopaque resin composite, the product is designed for a variety of clinical situations and is available in two viscosities. Featuring nano-filler technology, it allows for controlled flow, polish retention and natural-looking restorations.

Seamless blending of the composite is achieved through a smart combination of enamel-like translucency, dentine-like chroma and light diffusion technology. The translucency allows light to be transmitted through the material, enhancing colour integration with the surrounding tooth structure. The proprietary light diffusion technology enables the material to diffuse light similarly to enamel and dentine. Combined with the fine-tuned chroma, these characteristics contribute to smooth optical integration.

Using CLEARFIL MAJESTY ES Flow Universal

This flowable composite addresses broad restorative needs, including Class I–V restorations, pit and fissure sealing, and repairs. It has been formulated for use in both conservative and comprehensive treatment plans. Its uses include:

  • direct restoration for all cavity classes, cervical lesions (e.g. root surface caries and V-shaped defects), tooth wear and tooth erosion;
  • placement of a cavity base or liner;
  • correction of tooth position and shape (e.g. diastema closure and tooth malformation); and
  • intra-oral repair of fractured restorations.

Shade selection and features

The product makes shade selection virtually effortless: the two complementary shades of Universal (U) and Universal Dark (UD) are intuitively selected; no shade guide is needed. Shade U is suitable for most posterior and anterior restorations, and Shade UD performs best in darker-shade teeth (Shade B3 and above), particularly where surrounding tooth structure is limited (e.g. Class III and IV cavities). Clinicians can select the most appropriate shade based on cavity class and patient’s age.

The formulation of CLEARFIL MAJESTY ES Flow Universal includes several features aimed at clinical effectiveness, including nano-filler technology that helps to maintain optimal filler load for reduced shrinkage, enhanced wear resistance and long-term polish retention. Additionally, universal shade adaptation ensures good visual integration with surrounding tooth structure and simplifies shade selection. Thixotropic handling allows the composite to flow under pressure during placement, but remain stable once in position, enabling precise application.

Clinical advantages and application

CLEARFIL MAJESTY ES Flow Universal offers clinicians the benefits of adaptability across a variety of restorative needs, predictable handling and delivery, aesthetic results for both anterior and posterior restorations, and resistance to wear and surface degradation. An additional clinical benefit is the material’s radiopacity, supporting radiographic evaluation.

Syringe-based delivery provides controlled application and convenience. Application is straightforward and fits into standard clinical workflows:

  1. Prepare and isolate the area.
  2. Apply a compatible adhesive (e.g. CLEARFIL Universal Bond Quick 2).
  3. Dispense the material using the syringe and fine-tipped applicator.
  4. Light-polymerise according to the manufacturer’s guidelines (typically 20 seconds, depending on the shade and curing light).
  5. Finish and polish to complete the restoration.

A versatile flowable option

CLEARFIL MAJESTY ES Flow Universal (Super Low) has been evaluated by dental professionals through third-party testing and peer-reviewed feedback. Most recently, it received a 2025 DENTAL ADVISOR Research Award. In their conclusion, evaluators from the US-based publication stated: “Testing shows this composite to have among the highest physical properties for flowable composites that rivals the strongest packable composites in flexural strength and compressive strength, with an ideal radiopacity.”

Designed to support restorative procedures by combining controlled handling, aesthetic integration and mechanical durability, it provides a practical option for clinicians seeking a dependable flowable resin for a wide range of clinical scenarios.
