BARCELONA, Spain: This year, Dentaid marked 45 years in oral health. Founded in 1980 as a small family business, the company has grown into an international oral health specialist with eight subsidiaries across Europe and Latin America, a team of more than 700 professionals and a presence in over 60 countries. Its headquarters and laboratories remain in the Barcelona area, and its brands now reach more than 35 million people worldwide.

At the heart of this growth is the Dentaid Research Center, a global benchmark and one of Europe’s leading private research centres dedicated to oral health. It serves as the hub for all Dentaid research, developed alongside oral health professionals and aimed at delivering effective, evidence-based solutions.

The Dentaid Research Center operates across four core areas, including research into oral biofilm microbiology and the development of both pharmaceutical and physical technologies.

The Dentaid Research Center operates across four core areas, including research into oral biofilm microbiology and the development of both pharmaceutical and physical technologies.

According to Joan Gispert, manager of research and development at the Dentaid Research Center, “the Dentaid Research Center focuses on understanding the difference between health and disease from the perspective of changes in tissue histology and physiology, as well as the structure, formation, and resistance of oral biofilm and its relationship to various oral and systemic diseases.”

Each year, the Dentaid Research Center presents studies in collaboration with universities, research centres and scientific societies, helping to deepen understanding of oral health. A recent multinational study conducted with universities in six countries, for example, reported on the importance of considering the geographic origin of a sample to obtain more accurate information about a patients’ subgingival microbiota.

In terms of figures, the Dentaid Research Center has more than 5,000 formulas, collaborates with 25 universities worldwide and has a team of more than 50 professionals specialising in biology, galenics, engineering and medicine.

To mark its 45th anniversary, Dentaid organised a visit to the Dentaid Research Center for more than 60 international experts in oral microbiology and periodontics in July to exchange knowledge and discuss current research in oral health.

Latest innovations

Throughout its history, Dentaid has developed brands including VITIS, Perio·Aid, Interprox and PHB, which are well established in the market. Each brand offers product ranges designed to provide solutions tailored to individual needs, from prevention and treatment to daily oral care.

This year, the company launched two major innovations internationally, aimed at improving clinical practice while enhancing patients’ oral health. Based on a study conducted in collaboration with Heidelberg University, Dentaid has enhanced its Interprox interdental brush range, creating a line that meets a wide range of patients’ needs and makes prescriptions easier for professionals.

“Offering a complete and effective solution to all interdental hygiene needs based on the unique PHD criteria is the main motivation behind the new Interprox range,” said Manuel Pujades, Dentaid’s head of physical product development.

Another innovation presented by Dentaid this year is VITIS Anti-stain, described as the first formula specifically designed to prevent the appearance of stains associated with the use of chlorhexidine. The product is highly valued by professionals and patients alike, as it does not interfere with the antiseptic action of chlorhexidine, helps reduce treatment discontinuation due to staining and is gentle on the gingiva.

Manel Vera, CEO of Dentaid, underscores the company’s long-term commitment to science-based innovation on the occasion of its 45th anniversary.

Manel Vera, CEO of Dentaid, stated: “We firmly believe that only through science can we create solutions that truly make a difference and ensure efficacy, quality and safety for both professionals and patients. Our commitment to research, innovation and collaboration with experts has been part of Dentaid’s identity since the very beginning. It’s what sets us apart and what has set us apart for the past 45 years and will continue to do so in the future.”

Promoting and improving oral health

Global figures underline the scale of the oral disease burden. World Health Organization data indicate that oral diseases affect more than 3.7 billion people worldwide and that untreated dental caries in permanent teeth remains the most common health condition. Gingivitis and periodontitis also remain highly prevalent across populations.

In this context, Dentaid has taken an active role in raising awareness of oral health and leading prevention-focused campaigns. Among these, the 2025 Oral Health Throughout Life campaign stands out. This international initiative, launched in collaboration with the European Federation of Periodontology, aims to raise awareness of oral health at every stage of life. Through this campaign, Dentaid reaffirms its commitment to sharing scientific knowledge and promoting health education.

The company not only seeks to improve people’s oral health through its solutions but also invests in training for professionals and embraces its role as an active agent of awareness and change, committed to contributing to a more informed, health-conscious society.

Looking ahead, Dentaid will continue to drive applied science in oral health through the Dentaid Research Center, strengthening its collaboration with professionals and reinforcing its commitment to promoting and improving people’s oral health throughout their lives.
