MADRID, Spain: Through Gum Health Day, the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) aims to highlight the importance of keeping gingivae strong and healthy. The EFP and its affiliated national societies of periodontics are celebrating the initiative on Sunday, 12 May, under the slogan “Healthy gums, beautiful smile”.
According to co-ordinator Prof. Lior Shapira, the main aim of this year’s gingival health promotion day is to “increase the public awareness that gum health is tightly connected to general health, well-being, and a beautiful smile”. “People today pay much attention to their looks and have no clue that gum disease can ruin it forever. Gum health has an impact on health—but the aesthetics should not be ignored as this is an important part of our mental health,” he said in a statement released by the EFP.
As part of the Gum Health Day 2019 campaign, all health professionals around the world are encouraged to sign the EFP manifesto for periodontal and general health. This call to action concerns the prevention, early detection and treatment of periodontal disease.
