EDINBURGH, UK: This year’s European Orthodontic Society (EOS) Congress recently welcomed a number of international orthodontists aiming to receive an update on the latest scientific research and industry developments. At the accompanying trade exhibition, leading manufacturers had their newest products on display and introduced innovations developed to improve the orthodontist’s workflow. Among the exhibitors was German company Ortho Caps, creator of the TwinAligner system, a transparent and removable appliance for correcting malpositions.

With more and more adults seeking orthodontic treatment and growing demand for correction solutions that are almost invisible, yet painless and effective, aligner systems are becoming extremely popular among patients. At the EOS Congress in Edinburgh, Ortho Caps showcased its TwinAligner system. Made in Germany, the product is already successfully established in Europe, Asia and Australia, and is currently being introduced in the US by local distributor Rocky Mountain Orthodontics. “Entering the US market is a large step for a German company. We just recently attended the American Association of Orthodontists Annual Session for the first time,” Ortho Caps Sales Manager Mechthild Grothaus told Dental Tribune Online. “The TwinAligner system has been well received by US orthodontists.”

The clear and removable aligners for children, teenagers and adults are made of biocompatible materials and consist of a day and a night set. The discreet dayCAPS act gently, and the more rigid and thicker nightCAPS provide a stronger correction. By using aligners made of two different types of thermoplastic, orthocaps aims to achieve improved final treatment results compared with other systems. Orthocaps is the only one that uses two different types of appliances for each treatment stage. This approach helps to keep the orthodontic forces low and enables not only gentle and comfortable treatment, but also ensures more accurate tooth movement.

According to the developer, orthocaps can be used to treat almost 90 per cent of malocclusions. The aligner attachments are made of nano-ceramic, a material that is not prone to staining. “The attachments are customised to match the colour of the patient’s teeth. This is a unique feature of our product,” Grothaus said.

Orthodontists who offer their patients treatment with orthocaps benefit from a fast workflow and a wide range of services. “Our certification courses are held at different places, such as Hamm, Munich and London. Two weeks after the treating orthodontist submits the case via the orthocaps portal, he or she will receive a digital set-up on his or her account, which enables him or her to visualise the 3-D simulation. When treating a patient, the orthodontist provides impressions or oral scans to Ortho Caps to receive a computer-aided 3-D treatment plan. Shortly thereafter, the first customised aligners for a phase of six to eight months are provided for the patient. A new set follows after each treatment phase and new impressions. At the end of each treatment phase, Ortho Caps provides the orthodontist with a 3-D evaluation report to ensure that the patient is completely on schedule, as some patients may not wear their aligners regularly.”

Ortho Caps, based in Hamm in Germany, was founded by Dr Wajeeh Khan in 2006. Being an orthodontist, Khan develops the company’s products with special attention to user friendliness and effective treatment time, among other things. For a complex case, Managing Director Khan offers his advice and support to the treating orthodontist.

At the EOS Congress, the Ortho Caps team noticed particular interest in the portfolio by orthodontists from the Nordic countries. “We saw special interest in our products by orthodontists from Finland and Sweden, among whom were university staff. We also received requests to hold certification courses in that region,” Grothaus reported.

The Ortho Caps team concluded their successful EOS Congress participation with the traditional EOS golf tournament. The event, sponsored by the company this year, took place on the Fidra course at Archerfield Links near Edinburgh.

Shortly after the congress, Ortho Caps was ranked among the top 100 most innovative small and medium-sized companies in Germany. At a ceremony held last Friday in Ludwigsburg, Ortho Caps was presented with the 2018 TOP 100 award.
